its an electric bass i think
but in comparison to directly listening to a normal bass through an amp, there are less high frequencies
things that COULD be it, or combinations: strings, pots on the bass, amp settings, eq, filters
compression also shapes things like 'punchiness'
the timbre of the kick is important too, id guess

i dont know if this helps, i wouldnt call myself an expert :)

Yes there is.
But this doesn't sound like the s950 at all. It sounds too defined like Cyrus already stated.
I think it is an elecric bass too, or might be the planet phatt Rock uses sometimes.

Yeah you're right. It seems as if he is playing an electric bass. I only wish that Rod Hui was on these boards, he would be able to give us some insight.... :D

I listened to this album a few times yesterday. I must say that it is one of my favorite instrumental albums of all time. Those freaking drums..man.

I was messing around with my s950 last week and it reminded me of this topic. I sampled a little guitar one shot and when I hit a low note on my keyboard it actually sounded a lot like a bass guitar.. even more so with a little help of the filter. Not saying Pete Rock didn't use a bass guitar for this one, but I thought I heard something that sounded like a pitched up bass at 3:26. Don't forget this man is probably a master of his samplers.

hey if you want make simillar bass you should try in reson 4 -->subtractor (vst in synth in reason)--->bass--> Hypper bottom and you should use some eq ;) if you find a way you will sound quite simillar or this bass could be played from sampel I mean after recording he use eq and pick up low bands;)
