2KXL Zip disks, how to access old files for MPD & BPM use?

Hey all,

As the questions states, I have a dozen zip disks from 250 to 100 MB with MPC 2KXL info on them, samples, sounds, pgms, etc. Work that I did in the last 6 or 7 years. I no longer have the 2KXL but can I still use these for MPD32 sequencing or any thing else? I now have an akai MPD32 and Motu BPM. If so, how do I get them from the zip disks to lets say, a CDR or USB Drive or put it on a hard drive or something? I apologize if a question like this has been asked before. I did a little search and didnt get anything specific. Thanks for the help.

well you could maybe buy a usb zip drive and try and salvage your beats by reconstructing them... I would say that is the worst case scenario granted that the disks are not damaged or corrupted.

I'm not sure your computer will recognise the files so you may have to use a program like Translator to extract them from the usb zip drive.

With the 2000xl he should be okay I would think. I have thrown stuff back and forth between the mpc and computer. As long as the songs were saved as eav and not snd... it's all good I would think.

The disks and files I highly suspect to be fine, that being said I am sure there are SOME .snd files, but there definitely are wavs, pgms, etc. So, to clarify - I will be able to have all the info if I buy a USB zip or do I need that CSTranslator. (I've looked into Translator before but I honestly didn't really understand it too much, it seemed expensive given my needs). That being said, I definitely would like to keep all of this info, but I am not sure about reconstructing the beats per se. I mean, we are talking several years ago in a lot of cases...but, I do have some samples and arrangements that I really would like to have/use/hold onto.

If I got a USB zip and just created a folder on the Mac desktop, I could drag all the info there and be okay to use this info for instance with BPM and the MPD? Looking for clarity on this if possible. I remember there being some sort of 8 character file name limit or something in the past, and honestly, if we are talking hours upon hours of tinkering in order to accomplish this, I am not sure I am up to the task. I'm not expecting a slam dunk/super easy thing, but relatively headache free would be nice. Thanks for the help guys...

well one thing for sure... no question about it.... you need a zip drive on the computer.

get that piece and see what you have on the disks. then experiment.
