how often do you guys play straight 1/8th note hi hats ?
sometimes i hear this

sometimes i hear no hi hat on the snare, no hi hat on the kicks, and the hi hat after the snare the loudest? am i just listening too hard?

is that straight hi hats on every 1/8th? it sounds like he only has the hi hats right after the snare or the hi hats are never played if there is a kick or snare.

another example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DBKVxDU ... re=related
the hi hat right after the snares or on the & of 2 , 4 seem the loudest?

No not at all.

Hi hats can sometimes prove to be the hardest element to get right in a track, so keep listening hard and trying to emulate your favourite patterns and you should get the results you want with practice.

MAYBE (i havent checked) that can have something to do with compression: the hats on the & of 1 and 3 will be quieter when theres a lot of low frequencies from the kick still present..

Sometimes you might not hear hi hat under kick or snare because it is too short and it's covered nicely. That's also another technique. Dunno if u meant this
