I got my copy from ya bing, don't you remember?

So elmacaco, could Windows 98 read all of the partitions?

By elmacaco Tue Aug 31, 2004 11:27 pm
nope, just the first. It's not a big deal though, just use a transfer disk and the load it into the 60, let it convert the 3000 files to 60 format, and save that to your 60 disk.

But how can I fit an entire partition (I use 25megs per partition) onto the 60 when it only has 1.5megs?

You don't fit an entire partition, you export a program into the transfer zip, load it in the 60, then save it to your 60 disk in whatever partition you want.

Using such large partitions is not a good idea. I use 20 partitions, of 5 Megs each, that lets me keep about 3 full programs at 1.5 Meg each, and the associated sequence data.

THere is a file limit on each partition, I think it is 256 files only per partition, you'll never use up the 25 Meg before you reach that limit unless you only use one sample per PGM.

think about it, in one PGM, you have 64 sound files, a PGM file, and an All Sequences and songs file (individual all files for each developed song in my case.

That's 66 files per 1.5 megs more or less.

so 66 x 3 = 198 for 4.5 megs, the rest you have for sequence files and orphan sounds or whatever. about 58 files.

just one more PGM and you have 264 total PGM, ALL and SND files, just over the limit.

Ah, I wasn't up on that partition file limit. Thanks for the heads up man.

Luckily I don't have much on my zip disks yet. I'll back them up, reformat them and start again.

Thanks.

Yeah, I just read in the manual, I definitely missed that: Regardless of the size of eace partition, no more than 224 files can be saved to each partition.

And it's even in bold. I gotta pay more attention next time.

There you go, 224, Still enough for lot's of files.

"It can read every partition now and not only the first?"

That particular format would not allow you to additional partitions, but I do have a formatter that allows windows to read and write to all MPC partitions, but unfortunately it has some problems with some versions with Windows and type of drives.

(the MIDI dump feature in OS 2.12 was soooo handy ;) )

FAT 16 cannot go beyond 2GB but FAT 32 can go to 127GB :)

I have a 20 meg disk that has NTFS on it. I also have a 30 meg disk with FAT32. So you cannot always say that it is always FAT if small.

so just to make this clear.

i'm using the following:

mpc60 mkII with OS3.10, SCSI and ram upgrade (250mb scsi zip)
windows 98 running MPC editor (250mb usb zip)

so i can transfer a program to the MPC by creating it in MPC editor, exporting it to an MPC60-formatted zip, then swapping the zip to the MPC and loading it?

if so then that's just made my day...

the only question that i have now is about sound quality. when the MPC60 samples in 12bit it samples in 12bit non-linear according to Roger Linn's site, which he claims is 'quieter' than 12bit linear. but in the MPC editor manual it says that 4 bits are 'lost' during loading - this sounds to me like it is ending up as 12bit linear (unless the 3.10 OS is doing some really intelligent resampling as it loads, which i guess it could be).

do the samples sound any different if loaded via MPC editor or sampled in directly?

and what difference does the 'convert to 12 bit' option in MPC editor make?

thanks for any answers...i might well go and buy a zip for my pc on the strength of this...

I can vouch that the transfer disk method works wihout a problem using a mac.

Don't know too much about the 12 bit linear vs 12 bit non-linear stuff (bit of schooling anyone?), but I do know that the sound of a sample sampled using the 60 is IMHO much better than an imported one.

you reckon it sounds better using the sampling input? i thought it might. subjectively, what sounds better about it?

also i forgot i am using Windows ME. anyone know how that works with the zip disks?

thanks

can't really avoid using the word "crunch" when describing the sampled sound. Esp as far as snares go. doesn't always sound so good for the hats, which are cleaner when imported (IMHO) maybe there is a little distortion creeping in when sampling - esp real hot signals, and I find this suits kicks and snares well.

imported sounds seem to not be coloured in this way.

No objective tests done, but kicks seem to have a big more bottom end and whoomph (or is that punch?) when sampled in...
