i don't care how recent it is.. sound is sound which ever way you look at it. samples are only as dated as the tracks they are used in.. recent, old... who can really tell?
in the 80's it was raw 8bit synth drums.. today, heavier compressed kicks.. both add a certain flavor. i'll dig in old hiphop records and the new stuff.. the mentality is the same. if you're sampling, there is no such thing as ethics. how can you sit there and condone one form of sampling and praise another.. stealing is stealing no matter how you look at it. whether you are stealing bread to feed your starving family or committing corporate fraud in the amount of millions... ethically they fall in the same category.
i disagree with lifting the full melody and build ups of a track to just loop them on your own... i don't care which era they are from... nothing new is being created from it... that's not original.
if you just need a sound, just take it.. everything is fair game. if you don't make it obvious where it came from then it's yours. those major league cats are sampling too.. where do you think they get their stuff from? some divine intervention? there is no need to be childish or timid about sampling.. this talk of ethics is trivial.
we idie produces may not have the big budgets and resources the majors have to get live session players to come in the studio to lay down tracks or have the serious equipment, sythns, preamps and processors.. but wait... yes we do... sampling is empowering isn't it?
on another note, i give props to anyone who can actually lift something out of the newer tracks out there.. with all the layering and the lack of dynamics, it makes it even harder to pick out something that's tangible. in most cases, it seems more likely people will want to dig into the older stuff anyway just to make it easier on themselves. also, older tracks have character... which makes it even harder for the listener to pin point it's origins.
the point is whatever you need to express yourself do it without stepping on anyone else in the process.
