For those that have installed some sort of pad, what's the difference? I'm not having any issues with timing on my regular pads, so I'm curious as to what the reason for adding these pads is...
the reason for filling in the gap between the pads and the pad sensor is because the mpc1000 seems like it can hardly be used without the FULL LEVEL button on. i mean i have to literally BANG on the pad to get it even near the full level amount. and if you push down on a pad softly [but all the way down] most times it doesn't even register the hit. even after the pad upgrade the mpc1000 still has the worst velocity-sensitivity i've ever worked with. i mean those old BOSS drum machines from 20 years ago had WAY better pad reaction than the sh!t akai put in the mpc1000. you shouldn't have to bang on the pads to get them to react. and this flaw is mainly due to the gap between the pad and the sensor... hence the tape/pad corx/whatever solution.
and here's something else i've noticed that i've never heard mentioned here before... the pad sensors seem to not react as well to the lighter color pads. i was trying out the clear pads from mpc-stuff, and while they look great, they react the worst out of 4 different colored pads that i've tried [black, glow in the dark, and the stock grey ones]. on the other hand, the pad sensor seems to react the best with black ones. this got me thinking about the possibility that the darker the pad, the better the sensor notices it's presence... i'm not sure about this theory, but i am sure that the clear ones react the worst out of all 4 that i've used and i'm convinced it has to do with the fact that they're a lighter color than the stock or black ones. i'm also thinking this may play a big part in the rumor that "the black pads are the softest".. they aren't any softer if you ask me... they just react better. just some thoughts...
