anybody use an External hard drive?

to keep finished beats on? Like as a backup in case something happens to your main computer.

ALSO, what "kbps" do you guys keep your finished tracks in? I've been using 192, and i've been wondering if im even gaining or even losing anything using this quality. i know mp3 is 128, so i just up'd it to 192, but i really cant tell a difference.

I have an external drive that I keep some stuff on as backup and I have that driver mapped on my network so I can access it from my laptop and stuff.

192 is not that great. If you absolutely need an mp3 copy I would say minimum 320kpbs. As a backup of a completed song though... you should export them as wav files. Even if you have an mp3 that you convert to a wav file it wont regain the quality that was lost.

but you know how some music hosting sites are... the files need to sometimes be small enough to host so depending on the song you might have no choice to bring it down to 256 or even 128 to host it.

I don't use an external but I have an internal and back things up online. I back up my session files. An mp3 doesn't give you much to expand on and even wave file is worthless if it hasn't been mixed. Back up the core of your music, not the end result, unless the project is done, then you can just save the wave files.

yeah or wav if you are backing up your albums in case the CD gets scratched.

Picked up a hd usb enclosure some time ago. Pretty much had to, no more room in the comp rack case (already working with three internal hd's).

Now I wanna move up to a rack mount hd enclosure or something.

have you considered a USB RAID enclosure? I am really tempted to get one for next time or maybe build one myself if possible... I am unsure at this point if it is possible/viable.

TBH, I ain't looked at anything yet. But I'll take a look and weigh some options. I sold a 150g WD velociraptor I never got to use almost a year ago, the box was never opened. Got it 'cause I had plans on expanding the rig, then sat on it until someone wanted to buy it off of me.

I'm fighting to keep my interest in this stuff, but it's hard when there's so many distractions.

I have one of the 500 gig lacie drives... USB 2.0, I think it is a porshe one or something or designed by them or something to do with porshe... I dont know. it is a grey box around the size of a VHS tape...

well it has been turned on for around 2-3 years and only been shut off like 4 times for a little bit... it still runs quiet and like new. I payed like 80 for it back then because I caught it on sale.
