Same Old Sh*t! MIDI Communication Issues!!!

I'll try to make this as coherent as possible. I am having troubles getting MIDI to communicate from a Keystation 88es to an MPC 1000, which will sequence the incoming MIDI data and trigger sounds from a Motif Rack XS. All I'm concerned about is getting MIDI to communicate and I think the problem lies somewhere in the Keystation of my MPC. I've done what all the manuals have said to do and have looked through countless forums and youtube videos. I'm sure its something so easy..........and NO this is not a Bonnie Mayfield inspired setup!!!

Here's how the setup goes:

Keystation 88es is powered through USB cable
MIDI Out of Keystation to MIDI In 1 of MPC 1000
MIDI Out A of MPC 1000 to MIDI In of Motif Rack XS

Here's how the the internal setups go:

MPC 1000:
In the MIDI options I have: Active Track Receive Channel: ALL
Soft Thru: OFF (I have tried all other settings too)
Sequence change and internal pad sound: OFF

MPC Main Screen:
Track set to: MIDI
Program set to: Off
MIDI Channel set to: 1

In the Sync options I have it set to: Sync Out: A (Master)
Mode: Midi Clock
Send MMC: OFF

Motif Rack XS (In Multi Mode):
In the MIDI options of the Motif, I have as follows:

MIDI In/Out: MIDI
MIDI Sync: External
Clock Out: OFF
Local Control: OFF
MIDI Soft-Thru: OFF

Basically, I can sequence MIDI using the MPC pads to trigger sounds from the Motif, yet the Keystation either isn't sending MIDI to the MPC to be sequenced, or the MPC isn't sending the MIDI data from the Keystation to the Motif. (Obvious)

Midi input problems are pretty simple to rectify.

First concentrate on the input hardware, the Keystation in this case.

Test it independently to verify that it is not faulty and does send midi from its midi ports. It does? Good.

Now concentrate on recording midi notes into the MPC sequencer, you already know how to do this. Works? Good.

Now on each MPC sequencer track select the required Midi Out port and channel number for the Motif Rack.

If there is a problem, following these steps will help you to isolate it and put things right.

the issue here lies in the fact that you are powering the keyboard thru the USB port... this will provide enough power for the keyboard to send signal to the computer, but not enough power for the MIDI ports on the back.

the solution to your problem is to power the keyboard with an AC adapter... that will put an end to this issue for good.

and the fact that you insist that your setup wasn't inspired by boonie mayfield only leads me to believe that it was 100%.

thanks cool the advice here will help me since i got keystation 88es mpc1k n korg ns5r never used the ns5r in my life ... what i plan to do is record basses and ish via software synthesizer with keystation 88es then export the sound files as wav and play with em on the mpc yaaa ... gotta get me some midi cables man and gotta find the ac adapter now i never used it since back in the day since it was always powered up via usb port and thats all i needed since i was using software setup oh n i need midi cables to hook everything together...DAMN i needa get on this shit already n get some midi cables facckk!!!!

Right on man! Good talk! My setup was inspired by the equipment I used at a school I attended! Whether or not that was inspired by Bonnie Mayfield, who knows, but I highly doubt it! Nonetheless, thanks for the advice. I had a gut feeling that the USB power played a factor in my issues. I didn't like the fact that I had to use my computer to power my MIDI controller! All in all, I wanted to be able to track and sequence everything without using a computer, which I would use only for tracking finished productions for mixing and editing!

I will try all the suggestions listed from all the replies and get back on the outcome!

hey thx musicmutt for the setup, i'm currently trying to hook up my mpc1k + ns5r + keystation 88es and all is good(midi goes to the mpc) but no sound is coming from the ns5r.. can any1 help me out

would it be possible for me to hook up a mpc1k + keystation 88es + my computer(fl studio) for vst's?

I just got the power supply for the keystation 88. Still didn't work. However, through my frustration I tried a different setup. I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing, but basically, I just moved my input and outputs on my MPC over from "1" and "A" to "2" and "B". Switched my soft thru on the MPC to Omni B and BAM!! Everything works.

So I was supper excited, started jamming out. Next thing happens. I can record midi events onto the MPC using the keyboard, which triggers the sounds from the module. I hit playback. Nothing! I check my step edit, the midi events recorded, but during playack they don't trigger the sounds anymore. Don't know what thats about. So I shut everything off and think I'll fix it the next day.

The next comes, I turn everything one, go to push a key on my keyboard .............. and nothing!!! Now I'm stumped. I check all my connections again, it was just like I had it the night before. I did all the basic midi steps of setting ins and outs and all that. Finally, I push a key on the controller like 10 times and finally a sound comes. However, it only happens a couple times out of 10.

So say I'm playing a drum part on the keyboard with just a hat, kick and snare (playing this without sequencing) I get through the first bar fine, then the second bar just drops..........no sound.......then a kick sounds and no snare. So basically the sounds are cutting in and out!! What the F is going on??????
