I just got RS-16x, use it alot when Im on the go. My question is tho, ( and please don't flame me Im still new to alot of this. ) Can you set it up as a midi controller to ableton live or any other type of program. The reason I ask is when I have ableton live on it recognizes the program, but it doesn't really sync. I would just like to know if anyone has had this problem or has gotten past it.

Oh and if you dont know what RS-16x is its a mpc simulator program for macs.

i use it and trigger kontakt with it
i make beats in it every now and then
this app is really the closest thing to an mpc in the software world

here's how i set it up to trigger standalone kontakt ( should also work for other plugs and programs, but i just use kontakt as a soundmodule and rs16x as the sequencer)

Code: Select allRS-16X has the ability to hook up to any software or hardware synth with MIDI, so you can enjoy the intuitive sequencing workflow with anything from freebie plugins right up to big hardware synth monsters.
It's easy to get connected with hardware instruments. Either the instrument or the midi interface the instrument is plugged into will show up in the device dropdown, underneath the trackname on the main display. Select that device, choose the right MIDI channel to the right of it at the Ch dropdown and you should be good to go.
It can be a bit trickier to get RS-16X working with software synths, but fear not, once you know what you're doing it's easy.

First of all you need to set up a MIDI bus in OS X Audio MIDI Setup. Use spotlight and go to "Audio MIDI Setup" or find it in Applications > Utilities > Audi MIDI Setup.
- Open the MIDI Devices tab
- Double click the IAC Driver
- Tick "Device is online"
- Click the + button to add a port (It will probably be called IAC Bus 1)
- Click apply and leave Audio MIDI Setup

You now have a MIDI bus which enables you to pipe the output from RS-16X into the input of any sequencer or app that accepts MIDI input, such as Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase, Logic etc. and standalone software instruments.

IMPORTANT STEP - In RS-16X click on "MIDI" on the display selector and choose a MIDI receive channel that isn't "All". For instance you could choose to accept input on channel 1.
- Choose a channel that your MIDI controller can send, and remember that whatever you choose you won't be able to use this same channel number to output MIDI data from RS-16X because this will cause a MIDI feedback loop!! (This seems to be a bug)

Example: Choose channel 1 as the the MIDI input channel, and use channels 2 through 16 of the bus as outputs to other apps.

If you don't do this MIDI will be sent out of RS-16X, then come back into the input of RS-16X, causing further notes, and creating an endless feedback loop, which will result in a LOT of notes and sometimes RS-16X (or the other app) will crash.

Being limited to sending 15 channels isn't really a limitation as you can create as many MIDI buses as you need in Audio MIDI Setup.

Once you've got this right it should all work fine.

You might also like to try using MIDIPipe http://homepage.mac.com/nicowald/SubtleSoft/ which does a similar thing to the IAC Driver, plus allows you to mess with the MIDI data, and display what is being sent and received - very useful for troubleshooting and tweaking your setup.

Hope that helps
