i know the mpc60 and sp12 are the best sounding samplers ever build for making boombap..

when you convert to low quality 12 bit in the XL does the sound match the 60 or do i need to buy a s950 to really get that 93 flava.

Good for you to be that positive, man. I mean you "know" it...

Do you own a 2000XL?

IF YES:

Try that by yourself.

IF NO:

Why don't you buy a s950/S900 directly? (or an MPC60, SP12TURBO, SP1200, EMU EMAX...)

I own a XL but never used a mpc60 so i don´t know how the converted sounds from the XL compare to the 60.

If i ever come across an S950 (same 12bit engine as 60) i will use it to work with the XL.

...you got some comparison here:

http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=130522&hilit=sound+comparison

You'll have to sample into your 2KXL the original sample, then you can counter-check it against the 950 sample, which you'll find posted there.

May I peacefully ask you why is so important to you to match the sound of the MPC60?

I mean, why not just tweak the hardware you have until it gets sounding AS YOU LIKE?

That said, an AKAI 950/900 should surely do good even just as a thru-box...

If you want a more drastic change to your sound palette, you could add some cheap SP to the rig... like the 303 or the 404, or maybe record into a roland VS890... the FXs there can help getting the sound more '93ish, as a good REEL TO REEL definitely would.

I'd give a try to an hands-on experimentation rather than buy new gear.

The power of limitations inspires cats to take new paths.

In any case... http://www.mpchunter.com will find you that 12bit AKAI sampler for cheap in case you're not satisfied... and tomorrow it could be even cheaper!

HAVE FUN!

Just to make it clear. The 900/950 are no realtime insert FX units. You wont benefit runnin samples "thru" via the "insert" way. The signal won't get any of lofi characteristic cause it won't run thu the AD DA converter.

Thanks for the Blueprint, Peter: it makes sense!

I'll check from where I picked the "rumor"(proven by you to be so...) that you could use the 900 series running line-signals thru.

SO: USE A SP303 OR SP404 AS A THRU-BOX! (<===That one, I could HEAR it working!)

Peace!

I use the eb16 fiter eq and the eq´s on my mixer to get that sound i want.

ps You can hear how Pete Rock´s beats have changed since he´s used the XL,they sound more clear and less warm than his SP days imo. He admitted now he has to eq before sampling his drums.

If the SP had more more memory i would have bought the machine years ago instead of the XL

Yes thats also possible with other Roland samplers I know it works with the S10 and if I remember correctly it was also possible with the W30 (you can direcly hear when you change the sample rate).

I guess you read the 900 rumor on this site
