To quantize or not to quantize. Thats is the question!!!

OK, Heres the deal, I've seen and heard many producers quantize the following for the most natural feel: the sample, the snares and thats about it! I've heard its been to not quantize drums and hats for a more natural feel. How true is this?

for that is just two ways young one
there is also the way of the dragon (quantize certain hits, others leave un quantized )
way of the eagle (quantize kick snare, unquantize hi hat)

Quantize means u don't got next to no rhythm

I think it depends on the type of track you are trying to make.

lol you clearly have no experience
quantizing certain hits can swing a beat harder then you would think possible
you just have to know which hits have to be quantized ofcourse

use the quantize as a tool

an old man told me many years ago that quantizing ( in the early 90's too ) is for people who are short of rhythm
& beileve it or not, he was an back up drummer for CREAM............ so sorry J-Tawn

On topic: I quantize most instruments (synths basses etc.) at a swing of 54%. B drum almost always quantize. Snare and hhats almost never (I like my groove better than any machine, plus I get it done on the first or second pass).
I just think a locked in B drum works on a subconscious level to keep the listener focused. Whereas, the rest can swing and sway and still sound good.

I'll have to experiment with the quantize some hhat hits and leave others untouched, but man that is a lot of editing for a stoned guy who just wants to have fun!

ALWAYS QUANTIZE. THAT WAY YOU CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THE ROBOTS.

I quantize the downbeat kick and sometimes samples and/or snares

& imma say it again, In my opinion & from great experiences, QUANTIZE is for people with next to no rhythm...
most of u wannabee beatsmiths have never had your fingertips touch a drumstix ( & rock band don't count fools )

never did i say its not a useable function just not for me, so step on a REAL drum kit & try to quantize

Depends on if/what I sample and the genre of music. I dont stick to one way of doin things and Im not confined by other folks "rules". In the end I doubt you could tell anyway.
