People skills vs. Skills

I've heard this over and over about " it's only a small percentage of talent and mostly people skills " that get you in there . Ironically I've also noticed a lot of people who have tremendous networking skills but their music sounds average . The way I see it , even if you get in a position to have your music heard and distributed on a large scale , your content still has to be dope for the listener to accept it . I think the people skills come second place but what do I know ?

it's pretty much like you gotta believe in your material and be willing to promote yourself ..

after that it's social proofing then more promotion



everybody's music sucks to somebody it's a given, the successful ones just ignore that & find their audience & focus there.

have both and big music biz success is still like winning lottery and the people that do get it, probably work longer hours and harder after succeeding than ever ay a previous job

Nah, it's nothing like the lottery at all. Having both will guarantee success, it's just a matter of time / patience.

If you truly love the music, you won't mind the hard work.

if all things are equal( music skill, work ethic, marketing) & 1,000 equal people are competing for the same 10 slots there is always gonna be those

990 that don't get picked or haven't yet.


EVERYONE will NOT reach that level. the superstar status


but as long as you realize that the music biz is bigger than just superstar or nothing.

think of the job you work now 40 hours a week & your income (whatever you pay your bills with)

if you could just make that same amount off your music


isn't that success?

how much $$do you need to live & be comfortable?

set that as a goal if music is your carreer choice, if fame & riches come your way, congrats

Y'all are some downers.

By success, I didn't mean superstar. I meant success in general. I am one of those cats who feel thinking positively, and putting in work can get you anything / anywhere. Works for me. Life is grrrrreat.

By good promotion..... and by good I mean from someone who knows what he is doing
you can do a Bang!!! and come out of nowhere in the top surface overnight....

Thats good but to stay there you have to have your own skills...
or else you will fall hard


Its like a bar of steel....
after warming it up there are two ways of colding it.

Doing it quickly which will give you a strong material with high risk of failure
and doing it slow which will give you a relatively strong material but with low failure risk

I don't think you can ever have 100% control of outcomes, if you dream of material success in anything. What you can control are your efforts in each moment and learn by others successes as to more likely ways of becoming successful and actually taking action rather than just thinking and dreaming positive.

I personally feel you need to be able to truly believe in your music and have the self belief to promote and sell yourself. Whether lots of people deem it to be good or not is subjective and a hell of a lot of people will only like something once it's been spoon feed to them over the radio hundred times. I think perception speaks louder than actual reality in the creative and media industries. I do think people skills are immensely important nowadays too. It's not about contacts but more about relationships with people, that will increase your chances of success.

To be real with you, most of the time, I won't even show my work to my friends, because I don't truly believe in my stuff right now, that's why I will never succeed, meh. I'm 16, so prolly got some headroom, but I don't even have any site shwocasing my stuff.

results like my examples increase over time and with additional marketing/promotion/ networking


I think you do need all of what you spoke of yet marketing/promotion is what will keep successes rising and multiplying



In music biz you get plenty of negativity thrown your way but the positive feedback & actually proven results you can achieve just shutdown any of the naysayers dream killers or haters or whatever yet YOU got to Believe in YOURSELF and keep pressing in order to achieve the desired results, then keep on pressing for the next positive accomplishment set goals and follow through

above is just one example that offered proof to me that a complete stranger could appreciate my production enough to pay 20 bucks for an mp3 beat file (consider song mp3 files sell on itunes for a dollar, getting 20x that for a beat mp3 aint bad biz at all)

Well said BG, completely agree. I'd add to that by saying the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is that unsuccessful people don't fail enough, or make enough mistakes. When you make a mistake or do something wrong you find out how not to do something and refine your ability to the right way to do something. There is nothing to be afraid of, always believe in yourself, negativity is learning opportunity to become great.

I see man. I see you got mad promotion going on even with the promo girls. What are some other ways you promote yourself? I alredy got a domain to link to my myspace that I'm making right now, so I was thinking of ordering about 500 custom stickers, with my website and some sort of a design on em. I would put them like anytime I'm on the train or some shit. Let me know if that's a good idea, or can the personell put down the website somehow.
