Alright so this is very very disappointing, I just saw my LCD flicker and noticed a burned plastic smell and a bit of smoke coming out of the unit!! good god, son of christ I said and turned the machine off immediately.

I checked the temperature and it was not even that hot. So I went ahead put a fan on the unit and decided to wait until it cooled off to turn it back on. It cooled off completely, botted up fine, I waited a couple seconds after that and all of the sudden the LCD starts flickering again and the smell comes back as well as a more intense flickering so I go ahead and turn it off again because I know too well what it's about to happen, the backlight on my LCD is dying!! This is burning!!

This is the second time the lcd dies on me in this same unit, it was fixed a while ago but now it's about to happen again. WTF akai.

What should I do? It's out of warranty and the LCD has not completely died yet but it's almost there. Should I open the unit and try to fix this myself? I know how to solder and I understand some basic electronics so I can probably pull this off, I just don't want to have to wait 3 months again to receive the same machine with the same potential problem. Blah.

Thanks.

well my LCD just burned again, this is the second time it happens. This is just unacceptable, I am about to have a serious conversation with Akai.

so the light is flickering? or is it getting too hot? were you able to pin point what exactly the burning smell was coming from? It isn't sparking is it?

You might have some power surge in your home/studio.

I highly doubt this is a power surge problem. I have my machine pulgged into a surge protector and also have several other synthesizers computer etc plugged into the same surge protector. That said, this is the second time the same exact thing happens which means it's probably a design problem. If you search around there are other people that have had the same exact problem. This can't be a coincidence.

Here is my advice (from an engineer) when you get your new lcd backlight you should solder a resistor on top of the contacts so that the current is split between the lights and the resistor..

because it sound like the curent that is fed to the lights is to high...
