Forum to discuss all matters relating to the MPC1000 and MPC2500 operating systems created by 'JJ' (all versions).

I purchased an MPC1000 three weeks ago, now I really want to switch over to JJOS. As there are some fundamental differences between OS2 and OSXL (Pad assignment table etc..) I do not want to flip back and forth betwenn JJOS versions, of course OSXL seems most attractive for its features. But: After many hours in this forums and on the net I collected some evidence that users of the OSXL feel that timing, stability and/or "musicality" of the MPC1000 gets worse with OSXL. Some claim that the CPU is at its limit or over it.

So please, OSXL users out there, help me get this out of the way once and forever: Do you feel that the timing is different between OS2 and OSXL? Are those rare postings about the CPU overload just a Myth? Thank you for your insights!

XL possibly does put a strain on the MP if you push it hard, but I have never experienced any timing problems myself.

Once the forthcoming update is stable I believe there will be few reasons to stick with 2.

There's bound to be a few bugs, but JJ tends to iron out the bad ones within 24 hours.

Never heard that rumor. Never experienced any timing problems with any of the OS versions (Akai or JJ).

i can't speak about TIMING specifically, but i will say this with confidence: XL puts significantly more demands on the processor than OS 1 or 2. there's just a lot more happening under the hood in XL, a lot more features, and i think JJ has hit the point where it starts to put too much strain on the cpu.

i tested a couple projects of mine in both os 2 & xl. projects would cause significantly more lag & sluggishness in XL than in 2. how did i measure this? go to the MAIN screen and watch the movement of the line across the mini grid as your sequence plays back. as cpu load gets higher you'll notice that line start to move slower & more jerky, & start to lag behind where it should be and snap ahead to catch up. when load gets really high it will refresh it's position only once or twice per second. you can also see lag when you try to move the cursor around and there will be a delay before the cursor moves to it's new position.

i found projects that would play ok in os 2 would sometimes cause a little lag in 2xl, and projects that caused lag in os 2 would all but freeze up in 2xl. you could tell the difference quite easily.

now, if you have basic projects with not a lot going on there shouldn't be any problems, but my stuff tends to push the mpc pretty hard. i'm usually maxing out my voices & have pretty dense sequences & a lot of automation recorded. in my case it was enough to cause problems in XL & was one of the factors in me sticking with os 2.

i will say when i tested this was back when XL was in it's early versions. things may have improved recently. best to try it out yourself and see.

In responce to what Sooty wrote... It seems to me that a lot of programs are kind of like this, where they sort of allocate the importance of responce to the processor. Having the graphics lag first, so that the timing stays rock solid. I could easily be wrong, but I just don't think that the screen lagging means that the timing is.

Can we hear some of these dense sequences and automation? I'm getting curious what you're working on.

i don't have anything online right now. let me get some stuff uploaded somewhere and then i'll pm you a link.

i agree. i have had the mpc full on lock up on me (no response to controls after 5+ minutes) and yet the sequence that was playing when it locked kept going just fine. i think the ONE thing akai got right was to make sure the mpc assigned a very high priority to timing.

Thank you all for the replies. I would not mind if some graphics update gets slower, and so far my programs are not very sophisticated anyway. As such I see a clear recommendation for OSXL and see no need to worry about timing problems.
Thanks again for the insights!
