MPC2000XL for MPD?

Peace All,

This may dissapoint many, but pure MPC production never really took off for me. I've always wanted the usability of the pads (which I have enjoyed) but I have now become so accustomed to using my PC Software for everything (sampling, chopping, sequencing) that it just doesnt make sense to have to spend hours learning the ins and outs of MPC when I can already do the same if not better in Reason. It really is an innefficient way to use an MPC if your just using it as a controller (which I am at the moment).

So, with this situation, Im looking to sell my MPC2000XL and grab myself an MPD!

What do you think would be a good price to sell my machine for and which MPD would ya'lls reccomend?

My spec is:

MPC2000XL Limited Edition Blue
CF II Memory card reader upgrade
32MB memory upgrade
Instruction Manual (no box)
*Perfect condtion*

Thoughts anyone?

MPD 18 is perfectly fine. i owned one before i got my mpc. and i really liked it. 16 pads nothing more, nothing less. and its $99, i sold mine for $60 on Craigslist.. i never got caught up in the hype of controllers with 1000s of knobs and faders. however the transport on the other models is nice, especially with reason since assigning the transport is simple with the akai reason remote files..

Yeah that Transport feature is real nice, especially for like performances. I think I'ma go for the MPD26, it's fresh as anything.

My only worry is pad assignment and in reason. On my 2000xl I used to go to program and assign my sounds to a pads individually and then save the prog and re-use it. Can I do something similar with the MPD?

the 16 pads are basically the first 16 keys on the piano, bank b is 1 octave up and bank c is 2 octaves up..
its as simple as that. on Dr.Rex it spreads the smples across the pads in order of slices, on redrum the first 10 pads trigger the 10 drum slots, the closest thing to pad assign on reason is using nn-xt for rex files since you can arrange the rex slices however you want them.. if pads is your thing there are alternatives

akai mpk.. pads+keys
korg NANOpad

imo the mpd pads fail in comparison to mpc pads

In what way do they fail?

in feel, probably should have worded it different. they get the job done.. im just saying they advertise it as "mpc pads" but they dont feel like mpc pads.. feel very thin and stiff.. imo

Maybe that's just the MPD18. Have you tried the others like the latest one the MPD26?

the mpds are pretty much the same in their respective series. the mpd 16 is different from the 24 and 32... and those two are different from the new 18 and 26... but basically they are similar.


anyways it doesn't really matter because why would you keep a thousand dollar mpc to use it only as a pad controller regardless if the pads are a slight bit stiffer on an mpd...

ayo, remember your mpc is not just a sampler and you don't even have to use it for sampling

even not just for the pad triggering 2kxl = Midi Production Center you can use the pads and record the midi sequences in ya mpc even if ALL the sounds you are triggering with the sequences are in reason



you can get a midi out to usb in for 10 bucks off ebay and you mpc is a usb midi controller too


what they said above is true, the mpd pads DO NOT feel like the mpc pads, though have heard you may be able to put mpc pads on an mpd32 .

just something to consider though, mpc 2000xl 'suse is much more than just a digital sampler/recorder

the MIDI sequencing & triggering fuctions of it are what you need it for and it does it very well already

the pads' rubber is exactly the same between mpc and mpd. you can swap the pads from the two... that was a trick to getting the black pad kit and the pad sensor kit for cheap... buy an mpd16. The thing is there is something about the way the pads are mounted inside the mpd I think that makes it different. for one a thick plastic top cover makes the pads seem thinner then on an mpc. I think they have less room to squish down on the mpd giving the stiffer feeling. I cant be sure, but it must be something like that since the rubber is the same.

i have a mpd 26.. i like using it more with software than the mpc, but the pads of the mpc shhit on the mpd ones .. the mpc pads feel more thicker and softer imo.. like joseph said, the mpd pads feel stiff compared to the mpc ones.. but the mpd ones still get the job done

I agree 100% when comparing the 2000xl to the mpd16... but that is what is odd... the rubber is the same inside.

word.. i used to use the 2000, and i still have it.. imo, it limits u.. u could do a lot more with a laptop.. and i hate using the keyboard so i got the mpd 26.. think of it like this

feel: mpc>mpd>laptop keboard

features: laptop>mpc

yeah, i think its a very relevant debate, however i think I can deal with a difference in the pads if it means using the kit how its supposed to be used!
