MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai
By b-righteous Mon Mar 09, 2009 2:56 am
I thought Askia's list was nice so I started with his and edited out and added stuff. Most of this could be in OS 3.0 for the 5k. I put my biggest gripes with OS2 in bold sense I feel these should be updated along with any bug fixes.

Hardware
-High quality audio components and circuitry.
-32 bit processing with 24 bit file support
-24/96 converters
-MPC 2000-style jog wheel (inner and outer wheel) - the outer wheel moves the cursor position right or left such as the current Shift + L/R Cursor buttons
-360 degree Q-link knobs with led like APC + 4 more sliders
-Support up to 2 GB of modern RAM memory
-USB2 to device port for saving/loading to external hard drives and CD ROMs
-CDA ripping from USB and ipod support
-Increase load and save speeds at least 5X (has OS2 improved this?)
-Softer pads with ability to increase pad on threshold/sensitivity. Increase response on edges.
-At least 16 adat outs as option card or standard.
-T.C. on/off button with LED
-A bit wider LCD with 8 function buttons would be nice to bring more functions upfront and improve workflow speed.

Main
-Add two MIDI channels/programs to track
-Add Ram-based audio tracks
-Add Independent lengths settings for each sequence track Tracks are set to current sequence length when first recorded. Track length can be adjusted independently from main pressing window on track length parameter. From window you can add empty bars or append the track to itself.
-Automatic track looping for each sequence. When on, tracks in sequence loop to length of sequence.
-Add selectable accent sound to click/metronome
-Real time audition of quantize changes with sequence play from T.C. screen
-Remove second screen from T.C. since it is needless. All this can be on the first screen.

-Shift +T.C. toggle button brings up T.C. screen
-Add device/ port naming for external devices and channels.
-Add USB keyboard support
-Import midi file to track with real time preview.
-Midi phrase library.
-Add Chord function
-16 level scales
-RPS like function from Roland Fantoms

Trim
Chop shop improvements
a. Add F1 [ADD] and F2 [DELETE] soft-buttons to create slice markers while using data wheel
b. Once a sample is chopped, ability to use pads/pad banks to select regions to edit
c. Allow region start/end points to overlap
d. Add Shift + Pad to [Extract] waveform between start/end points and assign to pad/program
e. Add Convert slice regions to keygroup program
-improve tempo detect accuracy

-Add Scrolling cursor
-Add re-sampler with quick FX to edit options
-Cross fade loop

Program
-Streamline menus – add Filter and Filter envelopes to same page; give LFOs and AMP their own pages
-Add a second syncable LFO to allow full compatibility w/ S5000/6000, Z8, and MPC 4K programs
-Add more waveforms to LFO
-Even better filters and faster envelopes and LFO
-Add Chromatic to Note Page pad assignment
-Purge – add purge program and purge complete memory
-Add reverse and alternating to Play Mode
-Add sample start offset and delay to pad layers
-Auto-chromatic assignment of sample – add upper & lower note range
-Add ability to use new Multi function to assign samples to pads
-Add EQ per pad
-Add keygroup mixer page
-Add Modulation Matrix
-Add most Synth, Keygroup, Sample program parameters to modulation matrix (reverse and alternating, sample start offset)
-Real time stretch with tempo sync and high quality algo

Grid Edit
- Add [Insert] tab (like Step Edit has) to insert Note, Pitch Bend, Control Change, Program Change, etc
-Add copy/paste to function buttons.

Song
-Linear song mode with the ability to record sequences in real time like MV8800

Effects
-Higher quality effects with 32bit float processing
-16 stereo FX inserts
-Dedicated global stereo reverb send
-Global dual stereo send FX for chorus-delay line
-Add ability to independently save Effects Sets
-Master EQ- make it fully parametric
-Add multi band compressors
-Add side chains to compressors

Seq Edit
-Add ALL TRACKS and bar as an option to copy events
-Add split notes by pitch function. Each note can be moved to a new empty track and each new track is assigned to the same program settings etc. Selected pad or all is the option.

Arpeggio
-Arpeggio per program
-Import midi file to arp with real time preview
-track to arp
-Patch phrase midi trigger as arp. This would allow the arp to be recorded to sequence where the midi triggers could be rearranged in grid edit.

Mixer
-Add mixer reset function
-Add Shift + Q-links to globally adjust selected program parameter
-Add DAW style mixer (up to 64 channels) - add the following to all mixer channel strips: read/write automation buttons, 4 band EQ, outputs, Solo, etc (for Synth, keygroup, and sample programs)
-Add separate MIDI Mixer for external sound modules (up to 64 channels)

Q-link
-Add Q-link Modes with two button selectors
A. Mixer/Global
B. Program (ADSR cutoff etc.) /assignable program (appears in APM modulation matrix)
-Q-link sequence

Disk
-Add ability to save effect sets,
-Save mixer with programs and samples
-Save song + sequences + mixer

-Import Rex, acidized wave and apple loops with slices and tempo info to sample or patch phrase
-Soundfonts support
-.wav mix down to ipod or MP3 player connected at USB to host port.

Rec Sample
-Add [Insert] Effect/Dynamics (sample through effects/dynamics is much needed)
-Add ability to quick assign newly recorded sample to any program
-Skip back re-sampling feature like Roland Fantoms.

Input thru
-Add Filter and FX

I think something new and nice would be a audio converter inside the MPC... that way you can put all the audio files in the MPC, and the ones that wont load, you can convert them properly right there on the spot... just a fancy idea

I love beat machines as much as anyone! Hell I'm building the ultimate portable one but........ Why would you want to do all that on an MP? Why not just get a controller and logic studio 9?

You would have way more power and almost all of the features you described and be looking at a big screen.

Akai's mpc line is not selling hardly at all worldwide. That's y they are pushing controllers and kinda watered down the mpc 5k from the 4k as a last ditch effort to try to make a quick buck before they shut that line down. And when it bombed.... Horribly
do you think they will invest heavey money into a Truely new mpc like you are asking for when 95% of their profit is comming from contollers and the mp 5k tanked.....

It doesn't make biz sense for them to take that gamble. That's y u see all the speakers and cheapo accesories. The writing is on the wall brothers....

Think about it. They can make a controller with very lil dev cost and get it made stupid cheap and mark it up 500% and the industy is trending toward software.

So y spend millions developing a new mp that with those features would cost them big $ to manufacture and since economy is bad how many would sell at a 4000$ price tag?

I know you all love the MP. I can dig it. I think it was and is a great machine despite my hate for the greedy akai corporate yuppies but if you are holding on to hope that they will make a totaly new mpc...... I hate to break your heart cause it ain't gonna happen...... Unless...... There is a way..... U not gonna like it or believe me but you'll know I'm right.....

Here's your way to make it happen.

When our machine Beat Thang hardware comes out (which is gonna be a Lil beast) if all you mpc heads go cop it despite the name and hate for our blunt crazy marketing and it becomes a big hit......... And generates big $.....

Akai (who is motivated only by $) at this point will probably take a second look at the MP line and say "ya know maybe this market isn't dead yet"

Then maybe just maybe they may do another NEW MPC if they think it'll make money..... But at that point we'll already be halfway through with your list making our next machine..... Y? Cause we are not just motivated by $..... Our name speaks for it's self.... Beat-Kangz we enjoy this. We love hardware and will carry the torch even if akai won't anymore.....

Some may hate us now and that's all good but we just maybe the last hope for hardware beat machines and we are all American home grown born in the beat makers lab not in a far off board room in Tokyo......

Elektron makes cool stuff too though ( mad shout out to them) and if we get sucessful we may even invest in Roger and get him back in the game...... We almost did beat thang with him any way.... He just got a Lil timid at the last min when we got our $ to do it but if he sees us blow up and we can afford it we'll help him finish his machine too.... Won't be called boom chick though.....maybe will call it "the whopper" just to piss all the up tight tech people off.....

Still bang'n Thangz and Rageing against the powers that be....

Bang bang bang boom on Tha lunch table.

Pardon the typo's that was just a late night rant typed on my iPhone. Lol

ps. I thought your feature list was dope. I'm gonna study it and see what we can do to incorporate some of it in our stuff maybe.
I gotta give u props.... You know your mp. I respect that... That took time!
I know the manufacturing and biz side of the game though.... Wasn't trying to rain on ur parade but I'm smack dab in the middle of it every day and know exactly how those Ronald Regan yuppies operate. Its all about the Benjamin's 0% about Tha music..... It makes me sad to see such thought go into those kinda posts only for them to probably never read it...... I mean correct me if I'm wrong Jack odonnel if you get a break from your golf game to talk to the people who took the time to write these great feature doc's....... For free!!!! And Jack if you ever have the cahon's to come in here I'll be impressed and give you a Lil respect for that. These passionate loyal people deserve a Lil love from you.
If I see him at Namm I'll make sure to tell him nicely to come to this thread. That'll make a good YouTube video for peeps to talk $htt about ha ha.

Ok I'm done......

Carry on.

Yeah He and his company could learn a lot about their customer here and dominate the game if they paid more attention. In my humble opinion the 5000 (which i own) is pretty Ill (I would say the ILLEST but I'm afraid some of my MPC brethren will turn this into a "PSR is a Dumb Ass" thread). I use the dogshit out of it. But its a shame to see so many people having the problems that they have and Akai doesnt seem to care. Thats the easiest way to let a potentially legendary box become trash.

But anyways back to the wishlist... I dont know if this was listed already but a rom chip of some sort that preloads the synth sounds the way a module does would be nice. It's nice with a module to be able to scroll and play rather than preview and load.

The purge thing is so needed. The trim stuff are all great idea.Save song mixer settings so necessary.

Hey Beatkangz... I gotta say I'm not personally into your machine (well I never used one) but I respect your hustle. Me and a friend of mine basically designed a box similar in style and concept to the OL D Beat in 2000 when we owned an online custom PC business. we sort of spec'ed it out, had drawings and sourced some things for prototype and we just never stuck with it thru and thru. So I see you guys in those shark infested waters and I really respect your hustle. Keep it up man.

I think also it would be cool if the machine could read more file types too.. .wav. mp3, flac, and all that.

Nice sum up of intelligent thoughts! Indeed, many things could be realized with sort of OS 3. Maxing out the existing hardware (which I don't complain about) is much more reasonable. Let's hope... or can you forward this to them?

All that rom stuff u want will be in beat thang 2gig of flash stock
plus will be able to bus power plug and play a USB controller
adjustable ppq 24-960

ability to read samples off a USB key, USB 2.0 hardrived, 2 32gig sd cards

256 Meg of ram stock but here's the cool thing u are not limited to 129 programs.
You can have thousands on call anytime

So to make a beat you can scroll through kits and inst then quickly load one on a track in about 1-2 sec. If you decide you want to use another or make a different beat all you have to do is select another kit or kits and instruments and it automacticly purges ram...

No pre loading or anything. Just pop in the sD cards or USB key or HD and all ur programs are on deck anytime for use..... And if u don't have any of that we got 2gig of flash memory on board that's writeable.

Also we'll have 8banks instead of 4 and no
limit to how many beats or songs. U load one at a time and it loads quick but you can browse and load any kit inst beat or song in seconds and once again when you switch to another one it auto purges ram for you.....

Also 16 sample layers per pad instead of 4 on an mp

it'll be easy to assign markers or move them in auto chop

key grouping is easy

adjustable buffer size so you can set it really low when doing the beats and then raise it up if you want more FX and more polyhony.,..

It'll also be a full USB midi pad controler too.

Phantom power on the input so u can use studio mics for sampling...

Individual bar length. So track one can loop at 4bars and track 2 can loop at 8 bars etc

Realtime quantise and time sig and swing. Quantise can be changed at anytime and is non destructive. Your original performance is always there if u turn quantise off....

Plus 6hour rechargeable lithiom ion battery..,.

It's gonna be a lil monster.

Plus all metal and rubber buttons so NO BROKEN BUTTONS!!!

Assignable pitch and mod wheel

Almost done with it. Showing at summer Namm!

It's funny,, the THANG's specs are truly impressive. But in the end it DOES come down to desirability. Give that bad boy a remodel. Before releasing it.

yeah change the look of it a bit, more mature looking, not so much like a toy, the built quality sounds good!!!
