Nah man, I just don't sample the current stuff from the genres I produce in. It just wouldn't be right to me, plus, I like the sounds I get better than the current steez.
Come to think of it, I don't sample current anything really, sample CD's sometimes, reissues sometimes, but I'm not a big breaks collector or anything.
I see what boogie is saying a sound is OK but a sequence or melody is not. But hip hop is a genre that the sounds one achieves and uses are very important, and to a certain extent should reflect you. A snare here and there may not hurt, but it sure doesn't help.

I guess it comes down to the old creative gene pool / variety is the spice of life argument - if everyones sampling the same old drums then things are going to get pretty boring.
That said how easy is it to do it and heaps of the dudes releasing records who get mad props are doing it too - Evidence - " if you leave it open, then to me it's open game".
And what about sampling say a kick off an old record and then layering an 808 kick or one off a hip hop record under it to fatten it up ?
Personally I'm not a big fan of looping up a beat that someone has sequenced and putting it on a different bassline or something - after all we call it making a beat don't we - that's the skill of it .
I remember reading an intervierview with Superlover C in an old big daddy or stealth mag or something where he was talking about a break Paul C hooked up for him and how everyone in new york jacked it off his album at the time rather than from the original because of how it was hooked up - I think he said even EPMD used it off him. It used to happen all the time.
At the end of the day it's all about creativity and how you flip it though. And also having fun, right ?- can't forget about that one.

to prove a point.. this happens all the time with or without your approval LOL!!!
seriously cat take a pill or something cause you are stressing too much about where the samples come from. it's obvious no one likes loop biters but most can't see anything wrong with lifting sounds. there is nothing new under the sun.. you can't re-create the wheel.. it's all been done my friend.
what you can do is put your own spin on it and through your creativity and choice of sounds and build ups.. then you'll come out with something ffffFFFresh!!
if you paid half as much attention on your music as you do to this stuff you would be the bomb producer.

I do pay this much attention to everything, Politics, ethics, production, electronic repair, Analog synthesis, My MPC 60, race issues, all of it gets my full attention and I am never a stubborn case closed kind of guy who just wants to be right, I want to know more so I can make my decisions, regardless of the field it's in. When other's decisions differ from my own, I like to find out why. I wouldn't call myself the bomb producer, although others have, but thanks for the vote of confidence.
Now, on the the issue, He just said it to show that it happens? He must have felt something about it. either proud or hurt. How do you think he feels about the producer that sampled him? I bet it's how binger felt when homeboy told him he sampled the kick from whatever, and looped that lootpack joint.
But I could very easily lose that bet, but for the sake of understanding how people feel about it and why, I'll take that chance. I like to know why people feel it's ok just like I'd like to know how Bush has so many supporters, although I would much rather hang with someone that samples loops and drum hits of new releases than a bush supporter

elmacaco - dude your anti Bush sentiments, and hearing about how you're a "bomb producer" - it's got me worried - sure you're not that dude with the $25 mil price on his head ? I just knew that guy was holed up an a cave somewhere with an mpc making beats - Bin Loopin'??
Seriously though I guess I didn't make my point too clear - my feelings sway towards your side of the argument - the more effort someone puts in and the more originality they show the more respect they get - beacause they're making the music more diverse and interesting. These days just looping someone elses beat - it seems too easy.
I think in that quote Superlover C was trying to say how dope Paul C was as a producer / engineer, and how much respect he deserves.
peace.

Let me add my 6 cents....
As a young guy starting out I don't see anything wrong with sampling current music...kics, snares, etc...
But as you get more into your craft you should want to be better.....and that means doing more work to perfect your craft... I don't mean digging for 6 mo to only find 2 or 3 drum breaks.....But you have to look inside yourself and determine what that means to you......
The fact is you can Primo's drums, maybe even his samples...and try to remake one of his songs and tell me its hot...it won't have the same feelin, the same sound...trust
The bottom line is that less then 3% of MPC owners will ever have any type of success in the music BUSINESS. There are many talented beatmakers out there but the talent, desire and drive is what pushes your favorite producers forward....SO if you ever want to really be heard how can you ever jack from current guys, make beats and think your better then them.....
jus my thoughts

This just in:
Genesis sued a composer/musican for using ONE
snare drum sound in a tune. The musician had as
the court ruled sampled, reversed, down speeded,
bit reduced, effectoriced, reversed it back and
then used that sample in a tune!
as heard from national radio broadcast news in Europe.
can anyone find more on this? I can't find any more info. Damn that sucks!

easy spot. Still haven't confirmed it. Where would this news be found?

Isn't that "snare" the preset snare outta the SP12....probably w/effects. I know EMU worked directly with Phil Collins is providing him his own personal OS upgrade....
I'm sure that if someone was sued that they didn't get permission...because Phil has let his work get sampled and the end product was horrible..Bone, Thugs come to mind...
Countless MC's have sampled "In the air tonight" including myself....
Nas, lil Kim, even DMX on his frist lp

That was my guess, but the beginning of in the air tonight was a roland CR-78 IIRC, the rest is processed live drums.
