okay, I think layer a few high pitched rim shots together with a snare or two that have a good amount of sustain. then compress the shit out of it... put half of your rim shots with fully wet reverb (something big) and the snare with a good sustaining plate reverb half wet... and the other rim shots with the same reverb as the snare but like 3/4 wet?

haha... if that doesn't create the desired snare then at least you had fun making it!

so my guess is to take a snare drum under water and record it then?

yeah man...

actually I record that type of stuff.

One of my favourite music artists is Amon Tobin, and there is one song that what he did to get the snare solo is he had a large bucket he filled with all sorts of dry beans and chick peas... various sized ones. Then he slowly started pouring them onto a snare to get randomized snare hits with various velocities... anyways the effect turned out quite well... I forget the song that was on but it was on the foley room album. That album is really well done.... and amon tobin is one of the best electronic based artists.

go to the waves website http://www.waves.com/ and have a look at the artist video section. there is one video of the mixing engineer for stronger where he breaks down some parts. maybe there is some info in it for you.
also some of the other videos contain good info about mixing.
