First Deal with a Recording artist

hey !
on friday i spoke to a recording artist and offered him a beat.
he liked it and told me he would like to put some rhymes on the beat.
but he allthough said that hes would charge me a small fee for that.
so when i pay him for rappin on my beat, is it right that i ll get the publishin rights for the tracks ?
i didnt want to ask him because i didnt want to act like a noob ya know ?
so do i have to talk to him about rights and shit that or is it common to get rights when the mcs charges a fee ?

You paying a rapper to rhyme on ya beat?!?!?! Your buggin homie. In 15 years ive NEVER paid an MC....I charge for beats

Yeah man smoke the joints AFTER the deal is done. Why you celebrating? Your paying a guy to use your material!

hey, If you are putting an album toegether with ya beats to showcase yourself as a PRODUCER and your are "hiring" rappers you like singer's , etc etc.. get them to sign a "work for hire" aggreement if you are paying them a set fee for their services. that way they have no claim to future royalties or anything. just make sure that if you are hiring them, that YOU have final say over their recorded performance ( you are the producer.. (exec producer ) so you will get what YOU want from them


You would be better off working with artists that want to collab with no fee (how most of us do) but I understand you might hire a certain rapper just as you may hire an engineer or singer or bass player... but just make sure if you do so, that they sign a "work for hire" contract otherwise don't pay em a dime ( it's like buying out 100% their copyright/publishing etc upfront)

Unless Rakim is rapping over your beats, you shouldn't pay a rapper to do it.

I was going to say...unless it's for YOUR project and you're piecing together a roster of emcees for it, I have no clue why money would leave YOUR pocket.

You need to go read some books about how this music production thing works you never pay an artists to rap over your beat. That's like paying crack heads to smoke your product!! I don't care if it's Rakim or whoever they have to pay you. Don't do any more business until you hit amazon and get some books or go watch some videos on Youtube about selling your beats. Better yet click the link in my sig and come watch the beat selling videos on my site.

if you pay me - let's see - a measly $80, which is WAY below my usual asking price, i'll kick it with your freshest beat and take care of all that fiddly publishing for you if you want me to. hey if not, you take care of it no sweat. what do you say, brother man?

maybe u should both try to push the record and see what u both can make together and split that.
