Buzzing noise when recording from microphone

I am getting a horrible buzzing sound when recording through a mic directly connected to my MPC1000.

Here is what I am doing:

1) Plug a Shure SM57 through a XLR to 1/4" adapter to the left input channel of my MPC1000.
2) Set up mono recording on the left input.
3) To get a decent signal from the mic with an acoustic guitar I need to turn recording input level to full.
4) When I do this, even before recording there is a very loud buzzing sound in my headphones.
5) If I turn the recording input level down so that I can't hear the buzz then I can't even see my waveform when I record it and then have to normalize which increases the buzz.

The only things plugged into my MPC are power, the mic and my headphones.

I had the thought that putting a pre-amp between my mic and the MPC might remedy having to crank the recording input level but I have seen YouTube videos of people directly recording acoustic guitar with no problem.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

the signal (audio from guitar/mic) is not loud enough.
Background noise levels are being raised when you up the recording gain, I dont like to have my dial set any further clockwise than 9 o'clock - but i have my sound sources running through a mixer so i up the volume at that part of the chain.

A pre-amp would help.

I would also advise you get a condenser microphone and mic pre, I wouldnt think a stage mic is going to do the guitar justice.
