Sample format

Can't seem to find a thread on this, but, I Just bought an xl with an cf drive, and I've tried converting my samples to 16 bit .wav. the mpc recognizes the atapi drive but the file type shows up as unknown "????????" (is what shows up). Perhaps this is a conversion problem but I've tried several programs.
I've read that this could be an issue with my os, however im not totally sure how to check what os is on the mpc.

2000XL manual Page 187:

"Hold down SHIFT and press OTHER (8 on the numeric pad) to display the OTHER mode screen and press VER. [F3] to display the Version screen.
The version of the operating system currently loaded on the MPC2000XL is displayed."

I'm not sure but if I remember correctly you'll have to format the disk on the MPC (or was it the PC ) before putting samples on it. One or the other way.

Format the memory card (FAT) in the PC first so you can swap it between the MPC and computer.
