Distorsion or what

It's probably one of those whizzer things blown down a mic whilst not paying any attention to being bothered about getting any specific sound. Maybe he put it through a compressor, eq'd it, distorted it, put a bit of reverb on it, resampled it, re-played it back through an amp and sampled it again, then scrapped all those changes and decided to just use the original recording of it and eq it to fit all the other sounds in the track.

The sound fits with all the other sounds in the track as a whole. It may sound shit on it's own. Mixing all the sounds, eq-ing them, etc, etc in order to create a coherent track is key. It's this process that causes sounds to be more than the sum of the actual parts. I cannot emphasize this enough: a sound on it's own aint nothin until it's sitting pretty (whether that be juxtaposed or just adding a bit of extra somethin, etc, etc, etc) alongside the other sounds in your track.

Experiment. If you think it's got high-pass filtering and distortion on it then download a whizzer sample and test it out for yourself.

that sounds like a very well manipulated synth to me. or synth program in lotus' instance.

for comparison; this is a song off the blade runner soundtrack (by vangelis, who uses just about every synth known to man) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg0cmhjdiLs

listen in the background and you'll hear a slower version of those little whizzing notes all over the place
