Can someone please explain the set up for my mpc and motif along with 2 modules..I tried to search this on my own but to no avail. Im hoping someone has thiers set up similar...

I just want the mpc to be my main sequencer and have themotif es control my other 2 sound modules and at the same time play sounds on its midi channel as well... I know I have to set the motif up for internally but what is the mid cable hookup for this?

ill add on this.....on the mpc you must set it to MIDiI:device1a and on the motif go to song or pattern mode and each tracck is equals a midi channel.

Yeah, after you sync the motif and pc, you have to use the Motif's thru port for your other module.

you dont need to use the motif thru port. I have a motif es and mpc and nord lead rack all connected and i dont even use midi thru port of the motif es. All you need to do is connect the motif and mpc from midi a in and midi a out to the motif mid ins and outs now with the nord lead rack all i do is connect that to mpc midi out to the nord lead midi in. Like i said if on the mpc it saids device a 1a-16a with midi before it that will be for the motif and device 1b-16b will be to control the nord lead rack but you can play all the notes from the motif but the motif. Thats why you have motif connect midi in and out so that you can play notes in and then the mpc will play the motif and the motif will play notes in for the nord lead but the mpc will play the nord lead notes.

hey young keys..good looking as well..how do you have the ES internally set up..Did you make a template that will allow to work soley on the mpc or the setup u just explain so it will be already setup when u go to work..i want the flexabilty to do sequencing on both..the sequencing on th emotif is not bad at all but i know theres some song i already have that i want the motif to be a part of..For those songs i will just use midi B.. thanks again

out the box the motif and motif and motif es is pretty much ready to use with the mpc, all you need to do is turn off the local control on the motif and go right to song or pattern mode. I, myself go to song mode. from there push the mixing button and youll see 16 tracks. If you look at the scree youll see a voice tab, push that and then push the catagory button to select a new voice. All you need to remember is is you have the motif connected to the mpc from motif midi out to mpc midi A in and from the mpc midi a out to the motif midi in, each track on the motif represents the midi device channle on the mpc. For example. If i want to use the first track on the motif(piano) i would set the mpc up like this.... change the drum: to MIDI: and then 1adevice or Midi:1adevice. Next when you pick a new sound on the motif for track two you will do the same on the mpc but now it will be Midi:2adevice and so on and so on. There is really no template needed the only template i have for my motif are the ones i need for different type of mixer or effect set ups but thats a different story. i never use the motif seq. Shit i use to own a motif classic and now i have motif es and still dont know how to use it but i do know how to use the computer up and down just not the seq. all i know is how to set up things i need and tweak what i like or dont like. I really see no need to learn the seq on the motif being that i do it all on the motif. Maybe you have a reason to want to learn it but not me. I hope this helps but maybe you could futher talk about your question.

I completely understand what you saying with the midi set up and changing the voices on different channels ..I guess its the same soup different bowl casue i have to do the same whene Im getting sounds from my JV1080 and planet phatt which I havent even turned on since I got my motif es.. One more thing however that alwasy confuses me Is the recall of the settings and parameters. I know I will have to save the sounds on the motif ( do i use save all) ..I already got the mpc side squared away..I hated recalling sosunds on my planet phatt, casue for every song i had to do lots of manual labor to put things back
In terms of how I want things setup...ummmmm

Maybe so that when i want to work soley on the motif es I can do that with out all the switching parameters which is why i asked do you have to make different templates for this task( your saying no..COOL! ..The motif sequencing can make you do one step extra, but im trying to get around the learning curve cause thats why I purchase the motif so when i have an idea I can bang it out with out having to turn on this module or the mpc.. The motif es once i learn the curve can be pretty handy even just to take in the bedroom when my girlfriends wants quality time. Now she has MR Tif and myself..double the fun... So i guess thats it...I may have a question or two about syncing to my VS1880 which I actually did before, but now that the midi ports are being used ...but thats down the line..Thanks again...Its cool when u have people with similar setups and can identify with what ur trying to accomplish..Thanks All

well i kind understand what you are saying but here is my spin on what you are tring to do. check this out for future reference always remember to hit the store button on the motif when you get a good set up of sounds working in the seq. cause if you save your stuff the way you should and dont hit the store button your info will not be recalled when you reload it all up. Ok School is in pull out your note books and pens...Ready. You can save many ways on the motif with all medias it will allow but here is what i do know days to prepare for the future. Let me ask you this question do your mpc have a zip drive? if so follow me on this one and if not then get a zip drive for the mpc and a usb zip drive for your computer. A iomeg 100mb is good enuff. Ok now on the computer create two folders on the zip disk with the same name for ex. Hotbeats, lable each of them hotbeatsmotif and the other hotbeatsmpc. Ok follow me on this one. When you use the mpc and motif together and do all the seq. on the mpc and lets say you have created a new beat called "Myfirst" and that will take up five seq spaces on the mpc from 1 to 5. Remember to name program you have use to make that beat the same name so now you will have your seq called "My first" and program called "Myfirst". Now on the mo you will only use one song slot so just name that too "Myfirst" and dont forget to store your voice settings that was use in the seq. Now when you get ready to save it all, save everything from mpc on the zip disk in the folder called Hotbeatsmpc and on the mpc youll also also seq. under the same name Hotbeats. Youll also save the program you use called "myfirst". Now on the motif you will save it as a allsong and in the folder that is called hotbeatsmotif and you will name your allsong file as hotbeats in that folder. The reason i do it this way cause on one disk i will have the motif part and mpc part and everything is label to be able to find later on. Remember once you run out of seq spots on the mpc cause you only get 99 on the mpc and 64 and you will run out on the mpc way before you do on the motif. Like i said once you run out on the mpc youll call that a rap and you creat 2 new folders for the two and you do the same thing over and over again. now this might sound a little odd but once you get into it all you will see the light. one!

That does sound alot logical and i do have a scsi jaz drive with a gig disk compacity connected to my mpc.. The problem is i never hook that up to my cpu again casue the last time i did that i lost alot of work because of the naming scheme rules which im sure you know about when hooking up a drive to the computer and it has more then 10 characters. It **** everything up . I would love to buy a usb drive for this purpose about but mpc is not usb compatitable.. Only the 4000
I' think what i will do however is get a nother jaz 1 gig disk and everything i create using the motif/mpc store it on this seperate disk , and still go head and get the usb drive for the motif and keep a disk with all songs created using motif and mpc as well with the same naming scheme as the jaz disc .Now with the new jaz disc i will make sure i have the naming scheme correct so i dont have to be hesitant about saving on the computer for back up which is something im not able to do now cause im petrified. Your point though is well taken and i rarely use the store option , i just save my work from time to time.....but maybe the store option will save time..One last thing homie, and you've been very helpful..i save "all" as opposed to saving "all songs".. Should i continue to do so on the motif..i would think "all" is the safe bet.. Do you have a handle on motifator.com ?

just like you said saving as all is a safe bet cause that means everything from sounds to prgrams and all get save. I dont that onetime to get a photo of my mpc as it was when i started to use a new 64 slots for making beats and if i do any changes as far as making new sounds ill do another and add out. Right now i have done alot of tweaking of my motif es. i think i own have about 5 or 10 sounds that came in the user slots so right now im not tring change it so thats why i dont use the all when i save. but point giving you to be on the safe side.

hey yo young keys . you ever check the mo forums?? what you know bout mlan? i got a motif es ,triton studio,mpc2kxl, and 7 rack modules all hooked up midi with the mp being the main sequencer. the way i have it hooked up is to use the keys on the mp's sequencer with any of the other modules sounds, and also to sync to my 002 rack. hur it is...

motif- midi in to akai mpc's midi out -b-
midi out to akai mpc's midi in #1

akai mpc- midi out -a- to midi in of either the keboard or daisy chain you already have set up.
midi in #2 to digi 002r or what ever you have to sync it wit.

i hope this helps i asked this question when i first got my mp and never got the answer i was lookin for because there are so many different ways to hook it up . so dont think that there is just 1 way to do it . be versatile. learn every way you can. then you find your comfort zone . the way i save is just make a name for the sequence and follow it on the other sound modules. so on my motif i just name the song the same thing with all the patches ready to roll. goodluck..

yes i know about mlane and ima give ya one reason why you cant get it, and thats because of Pro tools. I use nuendo and that means i can use any kind of sound card. Pro tools will only see digidesign hardward and since by adding the mlane to your motif you are pretty much turning you motif into a sound card and thats the reason you wont be able to use. So since your using pro tool i would say get the 6 extra analog outs.

By herbsoe Wed Sep 08, 2004 10:19 pm
i knew that pro tools wouldnt work with mlan. i was just curious if you knew about it since you have a motif. i really dont need it . i got 2 patchbays and thats just fine with me. i'd rather buy more pre's anyways and better converters.
