well to tell you the truth the most effective way to get your neighbors to stop hearing your would be puting soundproof IN your wall, the foam and shit you see in pictures is more for stoping direct reflections of the sound bouncing to you from the walls. thats why people put foam at a pool shot angle from the listeners position top front sidea. live end dead end, you proof the front while leaveing the back with minimum treatment

if neighbors are the issue... there really is no solution other than headphones... unless you feel like building a new room inside of a room. 'cause you'll need the double walls to keep neighbors from hearing you...

you need a pair of closed-back headphones... personally, i use the sennheiser HD280's since they're just a lil under $100 and pretty accurate as far as i can tell...

im not a headphones guy for production.. i rather use monitors whether loud or not.. i use headphones to make sure it sounds good on both monitors and headphones, but i dont use headphones for making a whole beat

What he said. If you go to a commercial contractor store you can find very dense insulation panels that you can trim to fit into your walls. That will stop some of the sound from getting out or "leaking" through the walls, but I suppose a floating room, a thick insulated door and glass block windows would be the best solution.

Noise is a huge issue for me as well, my dad went nuts last night because of the noise I was making from hitting the MPC pads, not from any speakers, I was wearing headphones and he was in another room. Now thats **** up! Is there any place that does pre made panels that you can just hammer onto your walls? Having insulation fitted in the cavity of my walls really isn't gonna happen!

The only way you are going to eliminate traveling waves is with mass to stop it. Mids and Highs are easy to eliminate/control. Its the low frequencies that are tougher. You have a few options to reduce them. If you want to completely eliminate them be prepared to spend $$$.

Before we proceed let me just say this. Foam on the walls and egg crates wont do ANYTHING...dont waste your money.

Theres a company named Roxul. They manufacture an insulation that is called AFB. Acoustical Fire Batts. It a not a fiberglass but a mineral wool. You can basically build up your wall by creating panels to house the sheets. They come in 2 x 3 pieces and are 2" thick. If you cover up all of your walls this will help (not solve the problem completely but help significantly). It'll also flatten out a lot of the reflections and standing waves in the room.

Another alternative is to build a room within your room. This is more expensive but gives the best results. In our building we have 4 stages and a control room right on the other end of the wall. We can have 4 bands rehearsing and do voice-over work in the control room without interruption.

We basically built a room out of 2 x 6's within the current room. We left a 4" air gap between the walls and filled the gaps between the studs with about 4 layers of sheet rock and acoustical silicone. The entire inner room is mounted on 3/4" thick rubber vibration isolation pads cut in to squares. The key is to do the floor and ceiling as well or its pointless. but this gets expensive fast.

Some other innexpensive options that will HELP are:

1. Layer up the walls! Again, the more mass bass has to travel through the weaker it will be by the time it reaches the other side. If you layer up some 3/4 sheets of sheetrock on the wall and silicone them up you'll be creating mass.

2. Rugs on the floor, rubber on the desk, mopads under the speakers! Kill some vibration thats being transferred and it will get a little quieter for the neighbors!

3. get some smaller monitors. I know...sounds pretty crappy but if you have some lame old comp speakers to work with when the neighbors complain and then a nice set for the appropriate hours they really cant talk too much sh*t.

4. use headphones. Man I hate this option myself but I have a family and sometimes they dont want to hear me scrolling through thousands of kicks in my library looking for the right one.

5. Move.... Seriously, sometimes you live by whiny a** neighbors who will never be happy. The place I'm in now, the neighbor is a cop who works nights. So its PERFECT for me. He's a hip hop head who doesnt mind at all but either way, Im usually not around most of the day so his sleep is not interrupted and when he is at work it doesnt matter.

theres more options but this should give you an idea of where to get started.
