JJOS XL + HDD folder/sample list bug ?

Hi,

I'm new to the forum so forgive me if this issue has already been discussed !

I'm using a 2500XL and I've installed a 160G HDD for sample management.
The HD is fully recognized and has been formatted using the OS feature.It mounts ok on the mac.
I've created various folders on it using the os menu, then mounted it on the mac and copied the samples to the correct directories.
This is where I get lost....
When auditionning the samples from the mpc, I can see the different names in the folders, but they sound the same most of the time, just as if the samples were duplicated ! It is not therefore happening all the time !
I'm confused.
I.ve checked the contents of the HDD against the original folders from the mac and there are no duplicates !!!
Could you help me please ?

while the samples in the mpc, have them the same name? Could this be a cause.

If the first 16 characters of the name are the same then it will play the first sound. You must rename the other samples to make sure they have unique names for the first 16 characters to work properly.

thats true and this realy sucks..... the text string should be scrolling if its longer than 16 characters instead of being truncated....

So, do you know a free utility to batch rename on os x ? Also batch convert bit and sample rate ?

it's not a bug, it's a basic limitation of the akai os / file system. it's not going to get fixed.

To be honest, I can understand why they did this. Otherwise the file format for .pgm files would be variable and it would be harder to detect if there was something wrong with one.

I am sure that there would've been a more elegant way to deal with this issue, but I usually just write programs to batch process and rename files myself and it seems to get the job done pretty well.

More info on the case...
I renamed all the files to be strictly under 16 characters.
Now I can audition most of them correctly but still, when browsing and previewing some are played twice, althought their names are different... ?
What could that be ?

Maybe they are the same file? Have you taken steps to ensure that they are not the same file?

A good batch renaming program for Mac that I use is 'A Better Finder Rename'

For batch converting bitdepth and sample rate, I use Audiofile Engineering Sample Manager.

Also to clarify, as neartao said, the filenames don't have to be 16 characters or less, they just need to have a differentiating character within the first 16 characters. So, for example, thatbangingrocksnare1.wav and thatbangingrocksnare2.wav would be identified as the same file, while 1thatbangingrocksnare.wav and 2thatbangingrocksnare.wav would not. Neither would thatbanging1rocksnare.wav and thatbanging2rocksnare.wav.

Good point... but the thought I came to here was to listen to the two 'different' files on the PC and see if they sound the same.

I've got the 2 apps you're refering to.
I must have made a mistake while renaming the files, I renamed them as clap_1, clap_2, clap_3,....
Reading your post I will do it again as 1clap, 2clap,>>>>
