looking for that "melodic" sound?

Im looking for a particular program or keyboard that has very melodic sounds, stuff that you would hear in most Nujabes' tracks or maybe stuff that has that smooth fender rhodes sound.

any one have any suggestions on maybe a program or something?

(ive messed around a lot with my microkorg, but im looking for some new sounds)

Grab a used yamaha motif or roland jv/xv series module. They're loaded with plenty of sounds so you shouldn't have a problem pulling up something to satisfy your needs.

I have a kurzweil k2500 rack that still has a few piano and rhodes sounds I prefer over the motif, jv and triton that I have.

Yep, that's one of the two expansion cards I'm working with too. The other is the sr-jv80-12 hip hop collection.

Buy a Fender Rhodes..

You can run it dry or through effects, bass, melody... It always sounds amazing. I don't think anything emulates the sound of it perfectly. Easily the best investment I ever made for my studio.

Hammond Colonnade:

Nice Hammond. The Roland route is probably the cheapest hardware route to go - as stated earlier. Sample Libraries are cheap and will give you an idea of what you can do for minimal cash investment.

All great sound libraries with good expandability... you'll find the ROM sizes to be a bit small, but these boards really pull off their sounds from the good FX anyways.

Kontakt 4
Reason 4 (soon to be 5)
Battery 3 (or they up to 4 now?)

Kontakt 4 is probably the most inclusive, battery 3 just has a great set of drums and hits, and Reason will get you all kinds of wackiness to do with as you please.

Sample Companies:
Zero-G
East West
Loopmasters
MPC Samples

You can find a lot of great bread and butter samples/loops at these companies. Many offer at least a demo song or two and the prices aren't so bad. The things I personally look for are no loops (or minimal) and .wav files so I don't have to convert/extract samples so much.

Final Note:

BG noted the sample sets... while good value, you don't know of the recording quality... and a further issue is that it isn't legal to sample patches like that for resale on almost all of those synths, so you'd at least be in a legal grey area if you ever decided to do something with those samples.
