Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Hello I'm new to this forum and since Akai has such a horrible tech support program I'm turning to you wise men.

I recently purchased a brand new MPC 500, love it to death I think it is awesome. But when I went to load samples into it via USB, there was no dice. I tried going to mode <save> mode <load> then USB on both of them, it said connected on the MPC but there was no folder or Akai icon to be found on my computer. I'm running on a Mac OS X version 10.5 and still nothing... I've tried it on multiple Macs/PC's and still nothing. The USB cord works with other devices and shit. It's lead me to believe the memory card is bum and I need to replace it, I've rebooted my MPC with and without the CF card and it still says the same information when loading up, it is very difficult to tell if the memory card is working at all.

If you guys have any information or help before I buy a new CF card please help a brother out, this is really bugging me and I want to get on to making music.

Thanks,
Father

I can't load because nothing shows up when I plug my MPC into my computer, it's all very anti-climactic, it says connected, but none of the icons or anything you guys are talking about are to be found. I was thinking its a CF card problem?

The Mpc has to be on before you connect it (via USB) to your computer. Go to my devices (PC) and the icon or MPC text should appear. Its the same process as loading and unloading music to your mp3 player. I believe your beats should be uploaded from the CF card to the internal memory of the MPC500 because thats what the computer is looking for, I don't think the computer can read the 500's CF slot, unless you get a card reader.

Quote me if I'm wrong somebody.

I was talking about loading and saving inside the mpc.
If the mpc can't load or save anything from or on the card then u know it's the card.

The mpc has to be turned on indeed, but it should be able the read card right away. No need to load up stuff into internal memory or ram.

I am also having trouble with this same issue. When I first got my MPC (secondhand) I thought it would be a good idea to reformat the card. Before the reformat the card could be read when it was in MPC and when it was in a card reader. After reformating the card I partiotioned the card (1) and stuck the latest Driver .bin update on the card hoping to upgrade my MPC's driver (all while the card was in a card reader). I stuck it in the MPC and started it up while holding Shift, and the MPC did not launch the OS Bootloader. So then I tried connecting the card to my computer (mac) via card reader and MPC and nothing is showing up.

Also when I record samples onto the MPC, all recorded samples are lost after power down. And like fatherlonglegs I am also new to the MPC stuff, but very excited to get started! Wat do?

hey guys

im finding myself in the same boat, totally new to this and feel like im missing something.
im following tutorials and going through the manual too but im not getting any icons show up when connecting the mpc via usb to my mac. it briefly says 'indexing mpc500 disk' then that disappears and i cant find anything. when i unplug the usb though, i get a notice telling me i should safely remove the device in the future.
is there something very obvious that i am missing?

i dont remember ever plugging the 500 into the computer via usb, but i think on the 500's screen, you are suppose to choose USB connect, i think you can access this through the "Load" menu on the 500 (pad 2) and then already have it plugged in when you choose this, and then locate it thru "my computer" or where ever else your drives show up, if it doesnt automatically pop up to view the files.

or you can try restarting your computer, and then re-plug the usb again.

I have never had a problem getting it connected USB, but in my opinion it is extremely bulky, slow, and unstable when using the MPC as a card reader...

The best advice I can offer will be to get a seperate multi-card reader. They are cheap as dirt, and waaaaaaaaayyyyyy more efficient, fast, and stable.

The main issue I had was once I had USB in sync with the PC, I was forced to shut the MPC off if I wanted to un-sync and make a beat... Bit of a P.I.T.A.!!
