JJ os 3.12 installation problem

Hey everybody,

I recently bought a used MPC 1000, and i just had the chance to set it up. So, for your reference, my knowledge of this device is pretty minimal. I was reading about the JJ os and thought i would give it a try, and decided to go with the free 3.12 version first. So I did the following

1) formated/erased my memory card.
2) downloaded the jj os .bin file from the following address - http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/jjos.htm, and loaded it into my memory card, (then followed the instructions listed there)
3) turned off my MPC and then turned it on while holding down the erase button - (which didn't seem to do anything)
4) turned off the MPC and then turned it on while holding down the window button
5) pressed record

Nothing happened - So at this point, according to that website, the MPC should have automatically loaded the .bin file and installed the new operating system, but mine just didn't do anything. The MPC continued to operate using the old Akai system... Am i missing something reall obvious here? Like i said previously i have no knowledge of this device, and any help people could give me as to what i should do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

try formatting your cf card and then copy the jj os back to it.
the cf card needs to be formatted in the mpc, not the computer.

Thanks for the quick reply. Alright, so originally i used the MPC to format the memory card as you suggested, so i guess that wasn't the problem. Then I just tried formatting the card with my computer, and then formatting it with the MPC, and the problem is still not resolved. Do i have to hit any additional buttons other than holding windows and then pressing record? Thanks again - this forum is awesome!

No problem. I believe I know why the JJ OS is not loading. It's possible that your MPC's Auto Load feature is not on. So you can still load manually by going to MODE + PAD 2 (LOAD), then selecting the JJ OS from your Memory Card.

I'm not sure if you've read the JJ OS FAQ topic. But most of the info you'll need can be found there.

I checked to see if there was anything was missing from the following question there (which I quoted below) and I did in fact notice that Stan forgot to mention the Auto Load feature. I'm certain that's what may be confusing you. It's been 4 years since the JJ OS became available to us, which is when I first started using it. So let me know if you get it sorted out.

Q: How Do I install any of the JJ-OSs?
A:There are 2 ways of doing it:

A) You're switching over from an AKAI OS to any JJ-OS or
B) You're Updating from previous JJ-OS builds.

In Case A, the OS has got to be installed from the CF Card, because the AKAI OS cannot open .bin and .os2 files! Put the CF card with the OS file in the MPC. Turn it off. Next, hold down the [WINDOW] button and switch the unit back on... follow the instructions on screen to install the new OS. After JJ-OS is installed, you can open .bin or .os2 files from the Load Browser. The CF Card is not needed for later updating.

In Case B, just put the OS-File on the HD or CF Card and execute it from the Load screen. After the installation is done, Restart your MPC and you're good to go.

Alright, so I'm still having problems - here is what happened - After doing all the steps previously mentioned, I tried to load the file manually several ways -

Attempt 1 - 1) I Completely formatted my card using the MPC and put only the OS .bin file on my card.
2) I hit MODE - Pad 2 LOAD - chose MEMORY CARD - selected file "mpc1000_jv312" - pressed f6 DO IT

Nothing happened - it responded as if i didn't hit the button

Attempt 2 - 1) I tried to reset the autoload function by recreating the autoload folder which i had previously deleted when i formatted the MPC.
2) I hit MODE - Pad 3 SAVE - selected type "Save entire memory" - clicked DO IT - Hit F2 Auto Load.
3) This successful created a new Autoload folder in my root file.
4) I then dragged th OS .bin file into the autoload folder in my memory card
5) I followed the normal instructions given on the webpage for installing the JJ OS

Still nothing happened

Attempt 3 - I did all the following steps, but saved the OS.bin file outside of the autoload folder - directly into the ROOT folder, and tried to manually load it again - but still nothing happened.


I'm pretty confused as to how this is not working - Maybe my memory card is bad? or perhaps there is some sort of hardware issue with my MPC? - My load button and all my other buttons seem to work fine when i play around with the presets however.

I guess I'm not sure if i successfully reset my autoload function, because my mpc always automatically loads files, even when the memory card is not in, from it's internal memory. Maybe i will try to erase it's internal memory so i can see if it's auto loading off the card.

I just tried to reinstall the AKAI 2.11 operating system provided on their website to no avail.

Shit, I think my WINDOW button might not work. The LCD lights up appropriately, but according to the manual, when i press it - while the LCD is lit - it should open up another sub menu, or something? When I press my window button - whether it be in MAIN mode, or any various other modes like LOAD - it doesn't do anything. Any advice?

try downloading the file again, sounds like it might be corrupt
