i know this thread is ancient and i never post on this website... but i gotta give props to dsp for being so succinct.

I had the SP-303, and sold it maybe three hours ago. I used it with the MPC-2500 mainly for extra effects. As far as that goes it's ok, but since I track out to a DAW from now on, the SP-303 is pointless. The sequencer and chopping on it is a joke.

im figuring the only reason someone would buy a 303, would be for its effects. run your sounds through it for the effects, but nowdays, you can achieve those effects by DAW. So, unless you fall victim to gear lust, i wouldnt get it or trade for it if you've already got an Mpc.

Don't waste your time with either.
The EPS-16+ has a great sound, at any sample rate above 22.1k, but it's memory and effects make it useless as a sampler for any mildly complex arrangement. Yes the chops per key not using extra memory helps, but it's still no memory. ASR has the same sound but thicker and richer, more effects, and a usable amount of memory.

Get an ASR and sample at 30khz, and throw a slight filter on the top end.
That is the perfect balance between a little dirt/grit and deep dark smooth 1995 hip-hop sound.

imho they are both nice, I started out on an eps 16+ but for what its worth now-a-days I would say pick up the 303.
it is not a better sampler+seq than the eps but for pairing with your other kit the 303 would serve you well. The 303
is one of the great companion pieces, i have mine hooked up to a mixer and run everything through it from records
to synths to beat machines guitars and bases, it's always useful. I do use a computer, daw software and midi controllers as well but still i say **** a computer, there will be times when you need to get away from a computer, the 303 is not overlap by anymeans, turn that **** computer off and make music with your mpc , your 303, and your ears.
