I often sequence my samples and then play the drums live. I like to record the drums into a sequence without quantize and later edit them if need be. However, the way I play the drums live is always off set by the MPC. Despite the quantize being turned off I have a suspicion that the MPC still places notes in a grid.

Have you tried doubling the tempo you record at to double your PPQN?

Even with quantize off, it still only has 96 ppqn, which will essentially quantize to that level. It may be that you're hearing this effect. If you double your tempo, you can get 192 ppqn, which may help everything slide into place that much better.

^^ Co-sign, double the tempo to get 196 ppq resolution.

The standard MPC 96 ppq resolution IS a little stiff. If you're very sensitive you can sometimes notice the resolution limiting your note placement. However at 196 ppq, I doubt you will ever notice your notes shifting around.

Well you can still hear it if you're looking for it, but 96 ppqn can be a little low if you're being very sensitive to a sound. The 960 ppqn sounds like a dream on the 5000, but I'm not going to shell out that kind of cash when I can just record an audio track/take if I really need it to swing and sway a certain direction.

Hey it's a 'dirty' old school trick, but sometimes you just need to go in raw

Too bad the MPC can't go into the 400BPM range, cuz then you could quadruple the BPM a lot of times... double is better than nothing though.
