richard devine's really friggin (stupid swear filter what the hell we're not 12) smart when it comes to this computer music stuff. check around the net, there's an interview with him and it shows his studio (lots of cool stuff) and he talks about all the stuff he uses.

but anyway, from what i remember he does a lot of programming via formant stretching, advanced wavetable stuff, phase vocoding, a lot of heavy theoretical stuff. it's definitely not for everyone (not for me, that's for sure. i stick to visual programming stuff like max/msp and pd).

i don't think he uses a mpc, but his main tools besides his computer which makes all his basic sounds are a few akai samplers like the 3000 and 5000.

personally, his music is interesting, but it's nothing i can really get into. it's talented, but a bit soulless. like a really technical painter that only does portraits. not really my thing.

if you want to get into what he's doing, get the following programs for mac: pd (or max/msp, basically the same), soundhack, csound, reaktor. pc: audiomulch, pd, reaktor. all of these besides reaktor are free. those should set you in the right direction.

http://www.apple.com/pro/audio/devine/ i think has some stuff on this.

also from another interview he's stated it takes him fairly long to finish a track, there's a lot involved, ie tweaking, fitting in, etc.
