hy, i am playin mpc1000 live as basic sampler/sequencer/drum
with pre programmed patterns, not song mode,
use also 2 nd pattern, playin around with rolls, mute,
stereo out, in a mixer, mpc is sequencing a micro modular,
tr 606, mfb kraftzwerg, or a tr303 clone,
i like to use a lot of old guitar effects over the basic signal
like, pitch, dist, phase, delay!!
q link to filter,
i am reflecting to hook a laptop with reactor 5 machines for special
experimental sphere sounds.....parallel to the beats...

good post here!

i'm a drummer and i've been wanting to do something different to getting a band together to perform music from my EP i've been producing for the past 4 months.

so i have built a rigg - minimal acoustic kit (kick snare, hats & 1 cymbal), SPDS drum pads, kaoss pad 3 and a week or so ago bought the mpc 1000.

the plan is :

1. to have all my audio files from the songs except live drums in the mpc.

2. trigger them from the midi linked SPDS.

3. manipulate effx on some of the samples on the fly (using 2 of the 4 outputs in to the Kaoss pad).

4. have an open arrangement, so no pre saved sequences.

5. play drums at the same time (yea I know... but i like a good challenge ok?)

LOGISTICS (please help!)

some of the audio in the tracks would probably be the same file, running most of the time (not all the time but most of the time), like extra percussion parts for example. These need to run with loop on in a POLY program so that they can play alone or together till re-triggered at the end of each cycle.
but a bassline (for example) is going to be different in the "verse" than in the "chorus". So when i hit a Verse bassline (let's say it's an 8 bar loop) twice and want to move to the Chorus bassline after 12 bars i need to be cutting off the Verse bassline half way through it's cycle like i can do if the whole program is set to Mono.

Seen?

I can't do this in the Poly program mode i'm in!? Right??

any thoughts on how to get round this?

01. In the PROGRAM mode, press the [F3] (PARAMS) key.
The PARAMS page will be displayed.
02. Select one of the pads to set the mute group, by
hitting the pad.
03. In the Mute group field, select a number.
You can set any number except OFF.
04. Select the other pad to set the mute group, by hitting
the pad.
05. In the Mute group field, set the same number you set
for the first pad in the step 3.
You must set the same number to activate the mute
group.
Hit one pad while playing back another. The first
sample will be stopped and only the sample of the
pad you hit will by played.
Tips : You can set the mute group to more than two pads.

yes pads set to the same mute group number will mute each other.

i see mono programs as a quick way to set every pad to mute evry other pad, in poly pgms you have more specific control over muting properties.

mmj wrote:Hi all I use my mpc1k as a midi trigger in order to control a load of solenoids hitting milk bottles, mounted on the sides of a milk float. I realise this probably makes no sense but if you go to http://www.backtothetrees.org/tonefloat/ all should become clear.
The mpc plays the bottles live and also a few other things: car horns, lights etc. Its a good laugh and the extra midi in means kids can have a go themselves, using a keyboard mounted on the back of the vehicle.
Running it off 12v batteries and an inverter. Never crashed. JJ3.08

you are pushing the frontier of what can even be considered reality any more... strong

Bumpin' this out of nowhere as I'm starting to piece together a live set w/ my 1000....and well, that and this thread is cool as shit. 8)

Does anyone from earlier in the thread have any new tips they've learned along the way during their live show travels? Any tips from anyone else that hasn't seen this thread yet? :D

hey havent been around for a while but as I saw there is a corner for the live mpcists here, I thought I lookup my logins and add my 2cents:

I played about 20 liveshows the past 5 months, mostly across germany and also in amsterdam, nl.

The first 3 shows I played with an MPC5k but as I have no car it was just too bulky to carry it around the gigs - so I switched to an MPC1000 with JJOS. even though there are some features Im missing and the beats became more "puristic" I am pretty satisfied.

I play all live, I use no backing tracks or sequences. So far, I have two sets of 5 programs each, so all in all its about 2000 samples spread over 640 pads.

While I play, I go through them pretty fast - so its about 1-2 minutes per beat, before I switch to the next. With intro and short breaks in between and 1x loading, the whole show is 90 minutes, solo. With support of musicians, djs, rappers etc, I sometimes played 3-4h.

Looking (or better listening) @ my work, I consider it pretty minimalistic. The most funny part is that the audiences I play for enojoy the old boombap a lot more then the aarab-like styles - i guess it was too hectic for them.

I also play my mpc 1000 in the streets to make a lil money and to be able to practice somewhere else than @ the studio and get out a bit...

here is a small clip of the intro of my mpc1000 set:

I just started to film some of my stuff, but i still have some trouble on editing the material:

Some vids of shows I did, sry for poor quality tho:

I just bought and customized another 1k and just started with a dual mpc set - so there is 64 voices again and 2 fx more etc... i am loving it.

There is still a lot to learn. one very good advice is: never do a mpc shows without a screwdriver to open it in case it breaks down! i had the problem that the ram jumped out the socket once and at 3am there was no tech in the club with a damn screwdriver, so I couldnt finish the last 4 joints of my set that I prepared a day before :/

I will play two shows this weekend and hope to get better footage to post it here.

thats it for now. if you have any questions, let me know.

all the best,
j
