Difference between regular 4000 and the Plus

I'm sure this has been covered before, but to save me going through everything, can anyone let me know the fundamental differences (besides colour) with the MPC 4000 regular and the Plus model!?

In all actuality, a plus unit is nothing more than a standard 4k with an IB-4D wordclock/spdif board installed and a 80 gig hd.

Before the changing of the guard with akai, the 4k could be purchased with any combination of optional cards (IB-4D, IB-48P & IB4ADT).

Cheers for that. It's actually quite useful information because I would like the option to go out through SP/DIF.

So the 8 outs isn't standard on the plus or regular? Also what is the standard hard drive on the regular 4K? I've seen varying numbers.

It depends on at which stage the 4k was being manufactured and sold. A basic 4k on average houses a 60 gig hd. When Alesis/Numark took over and started rebranding it the "plus" by adding a IB-4D w/c coax digi I/O board, they upgraded the hd to 80 gigs.

At this point in time we all know that you can use whatever you like, but still within certain means. I upgraded my hd to 160 g's and it performs ten times better (and quieter) than the stock deskstar that came with the unit.

Just out of curiosity do you know if there is a build quality/reliability difference for the plus model built by Akai/Numark in comparison to the straight Akai 4K?

Word is...is that the white units that were made by Akai before they were sold to Alesis/Numark used better components.

Don't know how true that is but from what I've seen with most of the blue Numark units is, they exhibit too many problems or have corny ass issues.

Do you reckon $830 is a good price for a second hand MPC 4000 without SP/DIF, 8 outs etc?

Not bad, mine had the 8-outs and the word clock cards in it for $800, but big homie was in a pinch and sold it to me... Figga was talking $1150 at first. I guess I have a "PLUS" because of the 80 gig drive.

Yeah that sounds like a good deal. If only the add ons weren't so expensive! $200 is crazy for something that is pretty standard these days...

These optional cards actually dictated the price of the 4k depending on what model/features it had.

Remember, the 4k was launched 8 years ago. I've had mine for 6 of those 8 years. I got a standard 4k w/ the 60 g hd (which I've already upgraded to 160 g's) and no extras.

I've since added the adat card but still want the 8 outs & the wordclock joint. I remember when akai & some vendors were asking $299 or more for those options when they first came out, sh!t was crazy.
