Sort of MIDI question

im thinking of doing this: sampling into my mpc, chopping, playing the pads, tracking to my DAW, further messing with the samples
then
'midi-ing' my keyboard to my mpc, so the mpc records all midi from the keyboard, im 'monitoring' my keyboard through its own sounds (i dont know if thats a good description :p)
then
recording the midi from my mpc to my daw

id like the fast response (my daw is kinda slow, i want to use the midi for some vstis) of my keyboard, while my daw is playing the samples (you could say, 'in the background')

now im not sure if 'importing' the midi to the daw will mess up the timing (after aligning etc), maybe the mpc and daw are drifting a little from each other at times? does anyone know more about this?

Drifting is entirely possible. I've found software difficult to sync to at times, especially Ableton Live. Depending on what you are using, it may be better to make the tempo master software instead of your MPC while you are tracking your midi in. Give it a try at least can't hurt nuttin.

EDIT: Oh and don't forget to add a bar or two (maybe four even?) at the start of your track that are empty just to give everything a chance to sync up.

IMO, midi presents a challenge. The rewards are tenfold if you can grasp most of the capabilities it possess.

I've been dealing with midi in every aspect for two decades now. I say this not for grand purposes, but for the unexpected ideas that start from locking two or more seqs or an lfo or whatever together.

There's no certain rule of thumb to follow, except to be creative.

i don't really know if i was clear enough, but what i think i want to do is:

when my daw is only playing, record midi to the mpc (while hearing the sound coming from the keyboard, so i know what im playing)
then, when im satisfied with the take, transfer the midi to the daw (and lining up etc, i think im going to record the midi, but ive heard of 'dumping midi' too.. ill look that up)

What's special about recording to the mpc first then transfering it to daw? Why not record direct to daw in the first place?

Ever thought of using your mpc as a controller, but have your performance recorded to daw?

Easy...

You should consider using Midi Time Code. It's much more tighter than standard Midi Sync...
