I've had an offer to buy a macbook g4 for £100. Is it even worth it? I've been told that these are pretty strong and reliable.

15" 500Mhz G4 TiBook
512Mb of RAM (which I will upgrade)
DVD player
Airport wireless card
OS 10.3.9

I know sweet FA about Macs so excuse my ignorance.

Good price, but I wouldn't. I'd look for a g5 (with 10.4 atleast), if not an intel. Mainly it's just pretty old, g5 isn't as old and is faster than a g4, and if you want a used mac there are better options around. 10.4 just because it has more application/user support around and it's newer. Either way if you get a ppc(non intel) you can't upgrade to the latest os out even if you wanted to, it's intel only so I hope you're happy with an older os.

Deffo not worth it - even upgrading the RAM won't help - the processor is very slow in todays DAW environment

Depends what you are using it for I suppose - But i'd put the 100 in the bank and save for a useable computer.

You'll be scrapping that one within a year.

G4? Never in a million years, even if it was FREE.

G5? Possibly, at the right price, but be aware that some newer programs (NI Komplete 6) won't run on a G5 any longer.

Intel iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro? YES, YES, YES!!!

Personally I work with a trusted G5 and an Intel based MacBook.
