how does the virus c or the emagic es2 do for roland tb 303 type sounds? cuz the 303's are really nice but not worth over a grand...

Hmmmm a high pass filter definitely sounds like it is taking out the lower frequency range???? Any more info on this would be appreciated.

If you are trying to emulate the 303, get a Novation Bass Station. It is a great synth for the price, and even has a specific setting and section in the manual about emulating the 303. It does it pretty well, might I add.

I know RZA at one time used a Novation for his bass tones, but I dont know which model. In "Triumph" he says :

"A terminal, like Grand Central Station
Program fat basslines on Novation
Getting drunk like a ****,
I'm duckin five-year probation"

I had one, it was the poop, but money problems made me sell it. I regret it.

for 303 emulation check out the Future Retro 777. It is class, and will do some nasty analog bass (303 sounding or not).
Clavia's Nord range is the kind of bass I like.
The es2 does nasty bass...and just about anything alse you want...

If your sine is not pure, or true, it will sound like filtering. A triangle wave hase 3 harmonics, and tends to be quieter than a saw or square wave. You can filter a tri wave, but a filter removes harmonics from the source sound. A sine has one harmonic, so low passing it or highpassing it will just be a volume control. You can see it on an oscilloscope, the since just loses amplitude and may get some phase changes too. Since there is no harmonics to remove but the one that is the sound, the slope of the filter will act as the volume with a bit of phase shifting depending on the filter. Of course resonance changes this a bit, but the physics of it is clear. If you are using a VA, the sine may not be the purest of sines, so it may act a bit different, also if you are clipping it or modifying it in any way, it will change the equation.

Thanks. Good showing. I just didn't believe this until I looked at a couple of sine waves I ran through different filter's/ eq. I couldn't believe it and all of a sudden they SOUNDED different. As in all of a sudden I wasn't hearing a pitch shift but a volume drop. I still haven't wrapped my head around how this works, the physics of sound waves etc. But it def changed my perspective.

Yeah, sine waves are crazy.

Basically any sound is made of harmonics, a harmonic is represented by a sine wave. So theoretically a complex sound has many sine waves with their own behavior (envelopes) etc. the fundamental is the lowest pitched sine that determines the main pitch of a sound. A filter say a low pass, will remove the harmonics starting from the highest pitch. before the cut off point they are audible, after they are not audible (cut off) at the cut off point, the slope of the filter determines how quickly the harmonics are attenuated, the steeper the slope (4 pole 24dB per octave) the faster they lose volume.

With a sine, there is only one harmonic, so you are only dropping the volume of the sine.
