Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I searched first to no avail. So I thought I'd post here so I won't waste anybody's time with a new thread.

I've heard of people [one person on this board in particular] turning the contrast all the way down on mpc3000 and using the vga output to preserve the screen.

I was wondering if this applies to 2000 screens as well. For example if I'm just looping a beat to write to, or just playing with drum pads, will turning the contrast down make the screen last longer?

I always was told that by people for other things.. for example I had a stereo receiver amp that back a decade ago was fairly expensive and I remember asking why they bothered to even offer the feature of making the screen barely readable (high pale contrast etc) and I was told that it was smart to make it as light as possible where you could still see the screen because it makes the display last longer.

but I honestly dont have any science behind that because something else got screwed on that reciever. I still kept both jog wheels from it though in case I wanna mod something. The larger one would probably fit perfectly on the 2000xl.

SMC, do you think it would be interesting to document your 'quest'? like some pictures of your working, who you contacted etc
cause it sounds impressive what youve done (and maybe your process can guide people who want to do something similar (im thinking old gear will keep on getting cherished)), but i have a hard time getting a clear picture of what it exaxtly takes to pull something like that off..

The only reason for turning down the contrast in the MPC 3000 is to save the backlight in the LCD. This practice is from when EL panels weren't as plentiful and cheap as they are now.

The heat from the backlight in the MPC 2000/MPC 2000XL isn't enough to cause the lines in the display -- the issue with the LCDs is in the design.

Not to heckle, but actually the issue is in relation to ONE small component used in manufacturing the screen.

All 2K and 2KXL screens with LCD issues, relating to lines, or dead lines/pixels, are caused by this ONE component.

The actual design of the whole thing is really good.... if it weren't for the ONE part, they would be fine.

99% or more fail just because of this.

Ok, so, UPDATE

Tested...... FAIL.... improper voltage issue....

Sent back..... Manufacturer error. Gonna be a couple or few more weeks before I get revised screens.

You'd think when you design something, and give them the circuit diagrams, pcb layouts, components list, etc, they'd do it that way.

Wrong... tehy substituted some components for cheaper ones, changed 3 PCB traces, and didn't pay attention to the voltage requirements.

Then they say, 'well, couldn't you change your psu?'..... NO

They are making the correction and sending me 4 revised samples.

Booooooooooooooooooooo

Soon, soon soon....

On a positive note, everything else was cool.... mounted perfect, etc.....

:) well, being I'm manufacturing these screens, about the dumbest thing I could do is give out info on the originals... But since I've explained it all in great detail here already in another thread....

How does this exactly happen? I ask because I bought my 2k classic around '98, still use the mpc for the bulk of my drum programming, and fortunately, I haven't had the screen problems yet.

Is it due to leaving the machine on all the time? Is it gradual or overnight?

Heat is a major factor. As is dramtic humidity over time.

There are a lot of factors involved that cause some to fail sooner than others.

I had moderate success simply repairing these screens, and also made some worse.

In regards to repairing used screens, and to do it right, the cost to tool for repairs, and shipping two ways, and manufacuring the repair parts, didn't make sense compared to just making new screens.
