Iomega JAZ?

A coworker found an Iomega JAZ drive lying around and I was wondering if it would work witn an MPC 2000XL. Would it?

Another question is: has anyone tried one of these iomega drives with a SCSCI to USB adapter? Or do you have a secondary USB drive to transfer samples?

How do you work it out?

I recently won an ebay bid for a 2000 XL and it still hasn't arrived. Also, as I said, just bumped into that JAZ drive and a search here didn't return any really useful info.

Yes, you can use the Jaz drive with your MPC2000XL, at least until it breaks. Jaz drives have a flaw so devastating and certain to fail that Iomega scrapped the entire product and freely admits they are a time bomb waiting to explode. But who knows - you might get lucky and not lose all your data.

The USB to SCSI adapter might work with your computer - it depends upon how well the driver is written. The better the driver, the more SCSI devices the adapter will support. I've heard good things about the Ratoc models.

I see. good news / bad news. The bad kind of seems to outweigh the good, but well...

I'm not planning to save that many projects into it. It'll be mostly samples that I keep in my computer anyways. I'm mostly planning to sequence on the MPC and then record into the computer, so all won't be lost if the JAZ ends up failing.

And the coworker also ended up finding a ZIP 250 drive. I was sure that one works with the MPC, so I only asked about the JAZ. Brought them both home.

As far as the usb/scsi thing, I'm still feeling a little iffy about it. My computer is a newer macbook pro, and by some of the things I've read around in the past few hours, it seems that macs and ZIP / JAZ drives don't communicate too well. I might still try it.

Don't play and waste your time with jaz and zips, just install CF reader.

CF may be a more robust solution, but you can't beat finding free SCSI drives.

Can't complain about freebies.

Freebies are great, unless they fail and end up causing you to lose music. At that point, they are no longer free but cost you dearly. Is it better to pay for a reliable storage device that you can count on to always save your music in a way that you'll be able to retrieve it next time or better to use a free drive that worked okay for a month, so you loaded it up with nice beats, then you turn it on one day and the disk has gone bad. All those nice beats are gone. Which is the best deal? I suppose it depends upon whether your music is just something you play at and has no value or if you are serious about making music. The serious folk don't take chances.

I've got an external SCSI Jaz drive which has outlived 2 internal Zip drives. The 1GB Jaz discs are really rare.

I use a 2Gb Jaz drive with my Emu, not out of choice it simply came that way. I found a 2Gb Jaz Disk on amazon uk for about £3 I think it was. Check there, no doubt the same person will post internationally.
