SCSI hard drive confusion..

yo!

today, i tried connecting a scsi hard disk i got for free (no manual or drivers or nothing..) to a powermac 7500

i tried different scsi id's (and made sure they werent conflicting with the id's from the mac itself), tried both connections on the back of the drive (it looks similar to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Scsi-1_gehaeuse.jpg)

the mac os 8.6 disk manager could see something was connected via scsi, but it didnt properly show its id i set, and i also couldnt acces the drive...

am i overlooking something? a zip drive connected to the same port on the mac works fine..

DAMN!! something i think of now, the zip is 'self terminating' (or something like that :p) so i didnt think of this when trying to get the hard drive to work

is there a way to check if i need to terminate it? i havent yet connected the drive to my mpc yet, id rather mess up the mac than the scsi fuse... (and i havent got time to find a cable yet :p)

yep, you need to terminate the chain

maybe you could put the zip drive on the end, if it's self-terminating that would do it
(I can't remember if self-terminating means it can only go at the end, or if it has to be the only unit in the chain)

Not sure if this is going to help you but
the way I have my cf drive and zip dive daisy chained and set up
is like this
I have my zip on 5 and the drive is set to 6
but it shows up on every setting but 5
its a little tricky to get it going but it works

I am also not in front of my set up now
so this might not make any sense
I will re look when I am home and tell you exactly how I got it set up

yeah i thought about doing that too, but id need some other cables for that.. for now, i cant plug in the zip into the harddrive (without losing connectivity to the mac).. it is possible the other way (zip first, hd second, but that wouldnt make sense... imma try it anyway if i run out of ideas)

oh yeah, one thing thats kinda weird: on the back of the drive, theres two connections, under the lower one there is a symbol: a rectangle ('lying flat') with a horizontal line through the middle.. does that mean anything?

Should there be a controller card installed? I still use a scsi hd and it's connected to a Adaptec scsi card.

im not sure what youre talking about, but i think that isnt the problem: because i can get my dads zip drive to work..
