The MPC 4000 vs. 5000

Unfortunately the only Roland library I have is from the VP so I never tried to use it on my 4k.
I kinda keep my expectations low on the whole cross library thing since it's still a conversion and different variables can effect the translation.
The ASR-10 also has trouble with the CD Roms that are S1k in the S1k/S3k format but has no problem with straight S1k CD Roms other than not enough memory.
The problems really get you since most of the later libraries are made for computer use which means they will be CD Roms that are S1k in the S1k/S3k format.
Chicken Systems Translator can effectively change them to straight S1k libraries which allows them to work in the ASR or 4k.
If doing it for the ASR you should make them mono samples to reduce the memory problem then just use the effects in the ASR to widen then back out.

Regardless of me personally using or not using sample libraries, this stuff always comes in handy when you least expect it.

Just remember one thing most 4k users overlook is that there are far more to S1k libraries than those tired drum loop libraries and such.

Something like Mega-Synth gives you a massive synth library of old analog and hybrid type synths to use within the 4k.

Then you have stuff from companies like NiceBytes that gives you samples libraries from various synths and workstations.

You also have companies like EW that has always had massive libraries for the S1k that covers almost everything you need.

Lastly you can always use Translator or CD Extract to convert things into the S1k or S5k format to load into your 4k.

All of the things listed really help when you are trying to get the most out of your 4k, especially if you can't get AK_SYS to work correctly on your computer.

I've had the luck that one of my friends was in charge of a studio's sample library. they had floppiediscs for the S900 to Z8 allmost 500 akai samplecdroms (S1000 and S3000 stuff), so I copied them all!

Guys, I'm starting to see a trend where folks are starting to buy in on these 4k's. It's been considered the bigger brother of the 3k of course and I can def see why.

I'm a future new comer in the MPC world.
I'm wondering, with the MPC 5000, if it was possible to read the samples directly from the HD (instead of charging it in the RAM) ? If not, is it possible to programm it threw the firmware (i'm dreaming… V 3.0)?

How about the Compact Flash ? Can we bypass the limitation of 64MB for this one ?
Is is possible to play sample threw the Compact Flash ?

Last but not least : Is the XM-3 extension memory necessary in order to make a "true & real song" only with the MPC ?

Coming off the 3000, I can say that this is a proper statement.

Just sold my 5000 and bought a 4000. I like the 4000 way better, the sequencer is swankier then the digitized 5000. Ugly comparison, the 5000 is like a distant cousin with big titties and a nice smile.

Just did the same thing myself. Actually, I tried Maschine and then went to the 5000 thinking it was like the 3000. Sold it one day later and now I have a 4000. C/S everything you just said.

The 5k suffered an identity crisis from the start. So it's fair to say the 4k still holds the throne as the supreme mpc of them all.

To even call that thing a 3500 is blasphemy. It doesn't belong any were near the 3000 lineage. It's really more like a MPC 2500 plus or MPC2800.

Listening back to some stuff i produced on the 5k i realise that it is a really powerfull beast(mpc on steroids) and you just need to spend some time with it.If you cant make it with this one,your living in dreamland.A vintage dreamland is ok tho........

It's all good. Once it gets over its buggy laden o.s., it'll be alright.
