so the technics 1200 is really hard to find and the ebay people have jacked up the price. Is there any other turntable that'll make a decent compromise that still sells in stores? Looking for the next best thing

What are you planning on using the TT for? If you are only sampling, any Vestax, Stanton, Numark or Gemini will work. I used to sample off an old Hatachi belt drive. If you are scratching, I have had great success with the Numark TTx1 (5 years without a problem). Look for a direct drive to start with, then torque, and read online reviews at skratchworks.com or even guitar center.

Also, look into carts & needles. I use 2 setups, one for scratch and one for sampling. That goes for my tracking settings, arm shape (nice feature on the ttx1) and needle weight.

Good luck.

When you sample with the turntables, do you ever have a problem with the sample being echoey and distorted?

As stated before. A belt drive with a nice needle and preamp will be suffiecient for sampling.

For a pro quality turntable at a good price check out the Numark TTX-usb. Other Models work for most people but there are known issues with other numark TT models. The TTX USB is the most current and has been certified as the most stable. They usually run new about 100$ less than most turntables. I usually recommend buying gear used but with turntables I really wish I would have bought mine new.

Of course I've only used TTX-usb's in store, I spin on Technics 1200.

In my case, a good direct drive turntable for djs with a magnetic cartridge would do good for sampling. Sometimes you'll hear a dope passage on a record and you'll want to spin that baby back to get it again, belt drives are not so smooth.

I bought a technics 1200 m3d, almost new condition, for $ 325 (including shipping) I don't think that's jacked up at all. Yeah you will be able to get buy with this that or the other, but thinking resell value isn't a bad idea either. Sometimes throwing a couple more bucks to the wind is a good choice when what you bought can be considered an investment. Just a thought.
