Any ideas to what should I buy?

I'm going back to University in a couple of weeks and I'm getting a student loan from the government. I'm getting £1,850GBP ($2,990USD), so I'm looking to get some music gear and I've been looking in to NI Maschine, S950 and a Roland Gaia SH01. I liking the idea of getting a hardware synth so i can get away from software.

Any other ideas to anything that you have or tried out that you want recommend to look at.

Also I'm looking at maybe getting Akai Miniak. Anyone tried one?

If I was where you are standing I would go for the S950
an MPC and a hardware synth or sound module......

In general someone could tell you to buy a whole lots of stuff.

Considering my position I would deffinatly go for tons of records :D

school books and tuition are over rated anyway, use that school money for toys instead

Thanks. I've already have MP1K and was thinking of getting S950 for the 12bit.

Records is a good one. but really, I'm looking for toys.

If u want to get away from software I wouldn't go for Mashine.
S950 with the 1k is a good combo, but be aware of the downsides of having an old sampler. (floppy's for storage. Harder to backup with all the new computers, no 'real' chopping feature, finding replacement parts etc.)

The Gaia looks like an intresting choice to me. Maybe a little bit more expensive then the Maniak, but I think it's also more fun tweaking the Gaia with all it's faders and knobs giving that vintage synth feel.

But with the budget availible I would maybe go for both machines. Nice variation in sound and workflow, all controlled from behind ur 1k.

Learn the art of composing music rather than purchasing stuff that allows you to bypass this stage.

You'll eventually get to a point where you wished you could have stuff that allows you to make music and not some machine to do it for you.

Of course everybody wants a sampler, but how many folks that have a sampler have other synths/sound modules?

Educate yourself first in gear and recording principles, then it'll be easy for you to figure out what you yourself need rather than folks on an open forum making an expensive decision for you.

Not to dampen your spirits mate but i've just finished uni and student loans are on you like flys on shit.

Secondly, like most first years will do a LOT of partying, that money will go on general living and unless you have another source of income you will skint broke in the first month. Believe me I've been there.

Put a little bit away each month and then in the January sales fulfill your gear lust. Until then, stick with software, look for a second hand bargain on ebay for the synth there's plenty about and be patient.

Dont buy the Roland Gaia SH01, Personally since the late 90's Roland really hasn't made any good real synths,. That and the regular SH01 are just crap IMO. Very thin & uninspiring. Yes, like any synth you can program good sounds, but there are so many better / cheaper options out there

I'm not even a Microkorg fan, but for the price they are going for 1/3 of the Gayi, you will get a more powerful sound. Micron is also a great choice. They go used for like $200. And if you really needs knobs for synth programming, grab a access virus or novation.
