Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
Bymuzik 3050 Tue May 13, 2003 9:24 pm
I hooked up my korg triton to my akai mpc 2000xl ,but the triton won't play. The connections are: Triton midi out to akai midi in 1 and triton midi in to akai midi out A. I also put on the akai mpc, midi 1A-DEVICE 1 and for the triton I put midi channel 1. I don't know why it won't work! Please help!

is the triton audio out hooked up to a sound source like a mixer? the midi hook up allows only for data transfer.

I don't have a mixer, you really need one?

yes. The MPC L/R outs must go to somepace where it can be amplified and sent out (like to headphones or a mixer etc.) same with the TRION. all MIDI does (Musical instrument digital interface) is send data to tell units when and how to play. in order to hear it play, you need to have the L/R outs of the triton hooked to a mixer, so you can also hear the MPC at the same time.

MPC------> Mixer Channel 1 & 2
--------> mixer to speakers
Triton----. mixer channel 3 & 4

Like this.

Thats a tough ?
#1 how much do you wanna spend?
Mackie makes some nice mixers, I got a buddy who has one. FOr me, I use the digital out of the MPC to my soundcard, so for that I dont need a mixer, but to hear my Turntables and ASR-10 I needed a mixer. I did some looking and found that although a Behringer's spec's aint the Mackie's spec's, Behringer works great for me, and I've seen alot of peeps on here have behringers too. dont just cop it cuz someone said its nice though. check it out, run a sound source into the mixer and then listen for noise and stuff. Behringer's can get kinda noisy but if you play with it, its not a major issue, in fact I dont even notice it now that I know how to set my levels.

add to that that a Behringer will cost you several hundred dollars less, (my behringer was 90 bux new, the comperable mackie was like 399 dollars.) and that was it for me, a slightly less featured unit (behringer I got dont have mute buttons or solo buttons so I gotta kill the volume on a track to elimiate it, but so what. If you can afford it, and dont mind spending the xtra loot for a smal step up in quality go with the mackie.
Spirit makes some nice mixers too.
I found that I would rather have the behringer and spend the extra 200 dollars on a new drum machine and an effects module, but that is just me.
But behringer is nice, the honda civic of mixers, dependable and nice for the price. you most def get MORE then what you pay for from behringer, cant say the same about mackie.

What and how many cables do I need for the mixer?

do you have the 8 out board? if so I would get cables for each one, and the main outs. IF you buy a mixer that doesn't have space for the 8 mpc outs and the 2 for the triton (or however many you want for the triton) then get the cables anyway. at some point you will be pluggin 'em in and out (a patchbay may also be useful, just a 100 dollar box where you can plug cables in to route the signal to places so you dont have to buy a huge mixer to use the multi out capabilities of the MPC or triton-behringer makes a nice one)

the cables are 1/4 inch ones, unbalanced on all the MPC outputs (this is for the 2KXL, not sure re: reg. MPC 2000).
Dont hold me to that, but I'm 99% sure I'm correct. Check the manual spec sheet, "outputs"

Dont know about the triton's

with a patchbay you wont need a 12 channel mixer (8 for the 8 mpc outs +2 for the MPC stereo outs + 2 for the triton) you can have an 8 channel one and use the patchbay to connect it so, say you want to only record the MPC sounds, then you can send a sound to each of the 8 outs and go thru the patchbay to the mixer to record w/o changing cables. or you could record the MPC stereo outs (2 channels) and the tritons stereo outs (also 2 channels) and say you want to record 3 of the 8 mpc outs and a mic (total 8 channels) the patchbay means no unpluggin' and moving mad cables.
I dont know, if you dont mind pluggin in and out of the mixer 4get the patchbay. personally, I hate wasting 10 minutes to get an idea out of the mpc to my recorder, so I'd go with a patchbay, but that is just me some peeps are 100% cool with having danglin cables and rewiring the mixer everytime they record. its a matter of $$$ vs. preference.

If you dont have an external efx unit (which when you add a mixer which will have efx sends for external efx) I'd get that after a mixer but b4 a patchbay. If you are trying to build up the basics (mpc, keys, recorder, monitor speakers, efx units etc.) go with them b4 you get a "frill" like the patch bay. again, it all depends on your budget.

basically, think in terms of "complimetary" stuff. An external efx unit complements a harware mixer very well, adding TONS more options for how to work your sound when used with the mixer. so the benefit of the 2 2hether outweighs the parts (the sum is greater then its parts in this case)
with a patchbay and a mixer, the mixer is still the more important and versatle piece, so the parts (the mixer) outweighs the whole of the "no unpluggin cables cuz I got a patchbay".
so In that case If I had one or the other of these options the Mixer and efx unit are more versatile and therefore more valuable. try to think in these terms but decide what "value" each item has for you!

good luck with the rig dude. any ?'s just...HOLLA
