I'm looking to get some kind of audio interface to record beats on the mpc1000 onto my laptop. Can I hook up a 6 pin 400 or even an 800 firewire interface to my computer that only has a 4 pin port? Is there a big difference between quality from a usb interface and a firewire interface?

if you are getting a USB 2.0 interface or a firewire 400 interface.... they are basically the same thing.

you can use a 6 pin firewire 400 interface on your laptop's 4 pin port as long as the interface can be powered by an AC adapter.

for example, I have a motu interface that uses firewire.

I connect it to the laptop using the 6 pin to 4 pin cable and the 2 missing pins is not at all for data, it is only the 2 pins supplying the power to the interface... therefor I plug in the adapter that came with the interface and it works fine.

6 pin to 4 pin USB should be the same thing except most laptops have normal usb ports.

It's a USB interface. You can hook up your inserts in the back and record your MPC strait into your PC!

Aight, at the moment I'm leaning towards the mbox 2 because it seems its a solid piece of hardware that also comes with pro tools. But I might want something that's a little cheaper but with similar features of the mbox 2.

I cant wait to start recording these beats; I got hundreds of them just sitting on my flash card.

I'm just waiting for the day Akai put a F/W interface on the back of the MPC so a DAW can get all the channels anyway. Doesnt have to double us as a soundcard or anything but good god it would be useful.

Firewire? Gosh no.

Anyway, the 4000 already has an optional ADAT board so you need not wait.
