yo! does anyone know some ways to achieve this particular distortion like sound that occurs when a hi hat and kick hit together? its like the kick distorts the hat... im noticing this in PYT by warren g, but its not present in the youtube version.. but i think some people will know what i mean!

ive tried replicating it (for learning purposes ;) ) and i can get the kick to distort, and the hihat, but it sounds to me that it only distorts when they hit together... has this something to do with timing stuff of compression (like certain attack values and such)?

yoo

Compressing kicks and hats together can result in distorted hi-end if the kick has enough sub afaik

just have the hat and kick hit at the same time,

im assuming if you have time correct on, it will probably align the hat and kick together

i honestly DONT think people layer these two sounds together, just have 'em hit at the same time and you'll hear that "distortion" your talking about

Setting things up so that a kick hits at the same time as a hihat IS layering, and that alone is not enough to have the hihat distort.. Its a common sound on a lot of older jungle/dnb, because of the whole track being compressed in some way..sub heavy 808 basslines with hihats running ontop.. And the hat doesnt have to start at the same time either, just has to have alot of bass/sub under it, which will shatter the higher frequencies under the right circumstances

im not 100% sure it is compression though, and if it is, what settings to use if you even have to tweak anything.. it has been ages since i did this..

i think sending both sounds together and drive it into the red can give similar but not really the same shattered type of sound, and then it wouldnt be the same as it would also distort the bass, which is why i believe compression is involved. :D

i achieved this on a couple tracks i did with my fantom and mp2500. i sampled an acoustic bassline i sequenced on the fantom in to the mp, chopped it up and put it through bit grunger. in mp also feed the hi hats through the bit grunger.adjust bit grunger value and track volume to suite. when it happened to me i wanted to remove the distortion that occured coz there was alot going on in the mix. so i just didnt play the hi hat track and the bassline together.

well i guess yeah, but i've tried layering hats and kicks together before, tweaking them to get the sound he's asking about and it never comes out right, but i've also just layed out a hat track and kick track (2 different tracks) all with the same swing before and have achieved this sound with no kick/hat layering involved
