Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

New to the board. Lots of good information out here. I am considering buying an MPC3000. I have an MV8000, a triton, a JV-1080, ASR-10 and almost everything you can think of as far as VST and software (protools, Nuendo, Sonar, reason, etc) goes in a i7 8 core, 6 gig ram....blah, blah, you get the point. I know I do not NEED an MPC. But I have always wanted one. Its more of a sentimental reason. Also, with all the computer stuff I have, my music has so much more feeling when I come out of the box onto hardware gear. Anyway I found one for $450 with the backlight out but I could probably get it cheaper. My question, is buying a used MPC3000 worth it? Do many of you find yourself having alot of issues since its an older machine? Just want to hear your thoughts. Again, I know I dont need it, just looking at it and wanting to know if its worth it. Thanks.

Bollocks dont buy it there is a easier way to feel fulfilled and thats start smoking crack $450 will get you started and you have all that nice gear to sell so if you use your head you may get 6 months solid smoking and that equates happyness a beat could never give you.

Take some of Cosmic's advice, you can't go wrong.

Get the 3000.

If you only have one MPC make it a 4000 or a 3000, the rest are not as special as you might be led to believe.

Gotta love posting questions on a forum. Love the banter. I just got my first piece of crack (from cosmic pimps momma) and it was so off the chain I pawned all my gear to get more. But then, I realized I needed help. So I went to rehab and got deliverance (thank ya Jesus!) Now that Im clean, I want to get back to doing music. So you say 3000 or 4000. I tried a 5000 the other day and did not like it. My question was more on if buying a 3000 was worth it once it started to have problems. Is it too costly to repair.

Reading about the gear you have you should definitely get a classic MPC, if you want one.

May be a MPC60 (or SP12turbo/1200), cause they will print their sonic touch more, compared to a 3000.

VST sells the backlights for 60 bucks. I'm sure there's more than enough info on the internet for you to install it yourself.

So you have:

510 USD + patience and work = MPC3000

Sounds like a steal to me. Have you seen what these things go for on ebay? Even if you don't like it, you can turn around and get at least another 300-400 easily.

I havent got it yet. We are supposed to get together next week. I will get it then. Played with the 5000 the other week but there is just something about the older gear. Its the reason why old TR-808's sell for almost $2000 but MV-8000 go for $600 on ebay.

@ldizzy. The reason I have 5 daws is because I wanted to be familar with all the major platforms so I can excel in any situation. However, what I have found by all this exposure is that the new stuff is too steril with little flavor. It makes things faster, but it doesnt make music better (thats your job). It also doesnt add character. Its like cooking with a new pan versus great grandma's old skillet. That new pan might look nice, but that old skillet has flavor. The years of fryin catfish and smothered pork chops just adds something to it (yes I am from the south, lol). This is why I've even been looking at some old 8 or 16 track reel to reel to run tracks in and out of. Years ago I started out on a fostex R8 and man it sounded nice. I see the future of music changing to trying to recreate that old, warm, classic analog sound. Every time I hear "pretty boy swag"........too each its on but if this is where music stays, you'll never see another MJ or hear another album like thriller. but I digress

Anyway, enough rambling. I appreciate the responses. Once I get it yall gone have to help me get it right!!!!

..one's a mythical and revolutionizing analog synthesis unit of pure sub madness, that has made dance music what it is today... and the other is not.

it doesnt go for every analog/old school unit... a couple years ago.. asr 10 were almost given away on ebay.. same with junos... akai S samplers...

.. airjet guitars were also cheap before jack white became popular...

.. so if u ask me.. it may also have to do with the very fact that luttle wayne is hip...

very good... ive spent a lot of time on every of the platforms uve mentionned... isnt crazy how much u can pretty much do anything on any platform... we're blessed with incredible tools nowadays..

this has been discussed countless times. but i like how u phrase it... so what ill say will not be an opposition... i think ur right!

just want it to be mentionned : a skilled beathead could make a banger on ANY platform.. and make it sound as warm and full as it can possibly be done... as long has he spends enough time to learn it inside and out... (thus my question about ''why spend 10 x less on 10 daws then learn one inside and out.. but uve answered honorably my friend...)

i hear watchu say.. but i just want to make sure my point is tattooed on my forehead :

because daws are versatile.. doesnt mean u cant push them.. daws have their own sounds.. especially the crappy ones...

i know a cat who made fl studio an integrated part of his sound.. id give him my 3k..he wouldnt even be able to make a single track out of it that would sound like he does.... and hes got skills... i promise..

another example that comes to my mind is Justice..**** are Vst based.. and yet, they sound like the biggest **** rig of vintage post-war-soviet-copycat-synth one could ever dream of...

what im trying to say is that .. uve got to find something that suits YOUR workflow...

mpc 3k is a heckofa machine, and yes, it sounds like god beatboxing.. but if you ask me.. logic pro and n.i's massive are as incredibly well crafted as my mp 3k...
