How do MPC3000 and MPC60 compare to other Akais & samplers?

Hello all,

I'm new to the sampling game but would really like to start getting into making beats and rhythms out of strange sounds and samples. Somebody told me that the 3000 and 60 were more "favorable" and "musical" than the other Akai models and samplers. I also heard that Roger Linn, the inventor of the drum machine, was only involved on those two models. Does anybody have any feedback or opinions? Any would be greatly appreciated.

Depends what you're after, but if you can afford it, the 3000 is the biz. The 60 is good, but only becomes top dog of the 12 bit game with the 3.10 OS and the SCSI option, which together run $450 from rlinndesign.com.

I'd say the 3000 is a better choice for a first timer.

I agree. If I had the money I would have gone with the 3000 and an S950 sampler. I think that would give the best of both worlds, other than getting both the 60 and 3000. I have just the opposite setup, a 60 and a S3000XL sampler.

3K is the bomb. i can only compare it to the 60,2000, & 2000XL tho.

The 3000 is really good, however, I have had opportunites to switch very cheaply and keep both and turned them down outright. I just love the layout of the 60, so much space, and everything is within easy reach by a simple wrist movement. I hardly move my arm from the armrest when I'm working on the 60. (besides pad banging of course!) while the 3000 has an incredible over all package, I just love the 12 bit sound and layout of the 60, and the OS is virtually identical with the upgrade. but I have other rack gear to take on the duties of the missing features. So I prefer this set up at the moment, but for someone buying one sampler to start with and grow with them, I recommend the 3000 because you don't really have to upgrade it in any way to get rockin.

how would you compare the 3000/60 to the 2000xl?

are they harder to use/setup?
are they essentialy the same in terms of funtionality/ease of use?

Whatever machine you take the time to learn will determine its ease of use....

I started on the 2000 and had it soo long I could run the commands with my eyes close....

I switched to the 60 and at first it slowed me up being use to the 2000. After a few weeks though it was quite the opposite......

im a beginner, and im planning on picking up a 2000xl, until now...

should a beginner consider the 3000 or the 60?
i like the designs better and the whole Linn aspect..
but is the 2000xl the better machine for a beginner?

i second that.I had the 2KXL for a while and loved it! I could do pretty much everything on it. The thing about the 2KXL is that you can edit waves and see them, as opposed to the 60 and 3000, where you work with numbers.Some people have their prference.
I would recomend the 2KXL. The 60 is ill, I love it.But, for someone just gettin into MPs, the 60 can seem quite limiting and thus be a bit frustraiting. I've never used a 3000,but I'm told that with 3.10 it's almost the same as my 60.

yes i figured the 60/3000 to be a little harder to use based on the screen size.

are the 3000/60 more suited towards a type of genre, more so than the 2000xl? the 2000 is great for hiphop///what about the others?

Thanks everybody for the feedback! I got a question for Mikedean. In your comment, you mentioned also picking up an S950 in addition to the 3000. What would the S950 add that the 3000 doesn't already have? Sorry if I missed something. Also, I second the last guy's question in regards to if specific models are more suited to different styles of music.

the s 950 would give you 12 bits sound and a way to work a different way ( stay simple because of limitations ) .
