How do I chop up a Sample on the 3000?

I just got a MPC 3000 and Im trying to figure out how to chop up samples on the 3000...The whole number thing confuses me...If someone could break it down, I would most definitely appreciate the information....and one more question...is it possible to have a sample laid across one program and have another program with the drums run simultaneously?

No disrespect, but if chopping or just editing samples with you ears & numbers confuse you, then I suggest you get a newer MPC.

What works for me on a 3000 (with Vailixi) is...

Taking the sample (obviously)
Hitting the key to further edit the sample (I think its option 6 on the main menu)
In this screen, getting into the habit of using the start and end ZONE points to get the chop you want

When you're happy with it - select the Copy Zone to SND option.

You'll now have a new 'chop' that should start and end at the zone points. It will be saved as a new sound called ZONE xxx.

You can then assign this sound to a pad and play/filter/modify as you wish.

Works for me - I much prefer this then arsing around with graphic displays - which is why I prefer using an mpc 3000 and asr-10 than my old setup (2500 with JJOS / 1000 with JJOS).

It takes practice but is definitely worth it.

If you don't have Vailixi - I think you can copy your zone to a T(e)mp file and then copy this into a new sound, but haven't done this for a while. Its well worth getting Vailixi if you don't have it.

Chopping takes a long time on the 3000. Does the Vailixi upgrade speed up the process?

That video is really helpful... chopping on the 3000 is a lot of fun for me, once you get a good system down, it's a breeze. I do everything in the 3000, no need for computers... doing things by ear is the way to go.

I agree the video is a godsend. It's always a useful resource to find tutorials on youtube, especially for relatively rarer or less publicized gear like the MPC 3000. I've also corresponded with the video poster, holyprophacy, and he was very helpful. A good tutor for sure!

Depends on the individual, but from one I can gather... yeah, the new chopping features in the valixi OS update can definitely speed that part of the process up a bit.

Chopping is a bit quicker in Vailixi - not really that much faster, just that options like copying the TMP file to a new SND are provided for you.

Like a lot of things its like practice - but I do reccommend Vailixi.

this may be a silly question, but when i chop on my 60 mkII im sampling my sound, then changing the start/end time of the sample. i read somewhere about zones and been able to map all samples to drum pads quickly through the use of zones or something? however i've never found this before, and ive read the manual, it dont cover chopping. im on os 2.12 is this not a feature on 2.12 and only on 3.0?

when I sample into MPC3000 it gives option
of assign the time , threshold of a samlple

but Is there a way to manually record the sample
rather than pretrigger option?

another question:

how can I delete unwanted parts of the sample after
sampling to free up the memory like on the S950
for example?

it involves use of the soft start feature in SOUNDS then #2..idk if it works on 2.12..
