Why not just run the whole mix through cassette? It will get the results you want without spending the cash...yea it don't look cool but who gives a ****..leave the mastering to the people who know what they are doing..I find it hard to spend any cash on extravagant outboard when I know some one else can do a better job using better gear..I'm not a Mastering Engineer and it's not what I want to do or have too much interest in, it's an art form just like beat making so let other people do it.
It's always best to provide the mastering engineer with 2 versions of the track..9 times out of 10 they go with the un-mastered version which they will master them selves and will pretty much sound better than the version you ran through your expensive gear.

What are you talking about? You don't even know what I use it for? Guess what...I'm no ME either. I track with my outboard, run drum busses thru them, analog summing and buss compression, makeup gain and occasionally a bit of shelving. I don't master shtt with any of the gear I have.

Your first sentence leaves me to believe you've never heard the GTQ2 and the body and saturation it adds to kicks/bass and vocals, or the Clariphonic and the air and amazing top end clarity, the fatso and it's character it puts on ANYTHING you run thru it(hard to sound bad) or the GTC2 and it's versatility being able to run on OPTO or FET topology and is nothing short of ridiculous for tracking vocals and drum busses. If you have some cassette tape that can do all this, I'll sell all mine and buy $10,000 worth of cassettes. Sorry to be a bit harsh, but you came off labelling me like I'm some type of glorified rich kid playing a Mastering Engineer.

You even got a shot of an API 2500 in your Avatar, how you gonna knock me for having some gear

I have no idea... but since i started getting into buying hardware for music and live sound etc... I am desensitized from 4 and 5 digit price tags. I remember years ago seeing a neuman mic priced at 8 grand and nearly spat... now i think I just came to terms with not looking at that brand. They charge for gear like that. Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to build your own preamps by purchasing the exact parts used in those units..... and would it be as good.

I had to spend a whole day with some people who didn't stop talking about shi*tty outboard but didn't have a single clue how to make a decent track or beat lol But instead pointed the fault at the gear they had..ohh no man I need this analogue mixer so and so used..you heard his mixes dey dope son..I need to spend $404049045903485093485 so I can sound like that..man I need to make my tracks sound warm and phat..yea yea yea use dem valve compressors lol

In a lot of cases I have seen production taking over from song writing and tune, people get obsessed about the smallest detail....
I'm not referring to you but c'mon you must see a up-going trend in buying fancy outboard...u telling me they are all using it to it's full extent like you obviously are from what I have seen in your reply? Or are they just seeking that sound they hear on their fave artists without even contemplating how to make the tune in the first place.

All I was saying is you can get a good warm sound without having to spend lots and most folk can achieve it on a little budget without dreaming about one day getting the big boy gear..when you got the writing part sorted then go for it man and get the best you can...I love the API-2500, wish I had the cash for one but even if I did I don't think I'm at the level production wise I would want to buy one.

I feel you though. I feel you. A little saturation plug and shelving can do some 'warmth'. I think it's the fullness alot of people want. That takes a little effort though.

I come from the old school man. I love analog, in this new all digital world where everything sounds crystal clear and half assed producers make quarter assed tracks comprised of a Zaytoven drum kit and the latest softSynth VSTi.

I mean everything has its place.. to me.. at the end of the day.. if something sound good.. it sounds good. screw what it came out of.
but plug ins or not, now a days a LOT of music whether good bad or otherwise just lacks BAWLS. Its loud as ever and peaking the meter, but lacks SACK. Enter Kno1ills rack.

I have had a cassette deck on my to buy list for some time...like to buy a good one and a bad one too...oh and I want a reel to reel but the latter is more in my dreams as reel tape is a bit of a pain to buy freely here especially when you are skint.
Since I ditched tape in late 2001 for the digital world of recording there has been something I couldn't put my finger on that I missed when I made tracks..
Any way last month I got offered a cheap Fostex 4 track for 15GBP which I couldn't say no to....man there it is...what I have been missing.
That lo-fi tape sound, I have not tried sticking VST's through it but I'm sure it would make it sound dope lol
This is probably not to your taste but here are two deep house tracks I ran though the tape deck using just some cheap old TDK chrome tape and a Ferrite tape for the second tune. They are just played live from the MPC and the first one I'm playing my Bass Station live so some bits I mess up on keys lol

Basically it went from my mixer to tape (overdriven the tape to hell) then back in the PC where I did it arse to end and applied the slightest EQ and a load of compression to tame the kick..Just experimenting really..I know usually the practice is to compress before going to tape to get the best SNR but hey ho this seemed to work quite well.

man i was thinking of getting a stereo unit good tape deck just so I could listen to the stack of old tapes I still got from back in my walkman days... panasonic shockwave with the chrome twist lock.

I am honestly curious about what i got on the recordable tapes in the collection. I know the albums I already got digital copies for the most part. I wish I still had my old purple casette..... you know the one.

I still got my Sony walkman that has been with me since I was 7...thing is my mum chucked all my tapes in 2001 when we moved house

I was going to get a good deck again to record my dj mixes to, just missed a nice one on ebay that sold cheap(old top of the range Technics direct drive)..the Fostex I use more as an effect...I mean technically it's rubbish and what you put in certainly wont sound the same on the way out lol
