note variation slider

i've just got myself an mpc 2000xl and the note variation slider doesn't seem to be working. is it possible to replace this slider? also, is the slider an essential part of the machine or can i do the same things with the data wheel? the machine is being used for hip hop only if this helps. thanks

Have you read the manual on how to use it?

(Shift + Assign) takes you to the Aassign Note screen where you choose Tuning Attack Decay or Filter
you choose the range
and also the note you want the effect to go to

Yes it is possible to change the slider, just find the right part
Most of the things can be done with the jog whell but not as convinient

i can go to the screen but the values dont change when i move the slider. i'll have another good look at it. i must be doing sometghing wrong. thanks

you go to the screen but no numbers change unless you go with the jog wheel.

Just load a kick sample to pad 1
press Shift and Assign press Pad 1
and while moving the slider keep playing the kick

It should change the sound

no joy. i did the diagnostic test and the slider stays at 5. i defo think its faulty slider. are these sliders easy to come by? easy to fit? and is it really necessary to get one or can i still control everything without it?

I think they run about $15 at MPCstuff.com. If you have a midi controller you can assign a cc# to it in the meantime and control it externally.

You pull the plastic handle up....
You unskrew all the skrews only necessary to remove the upper cover ....
this means the ones on the back...
the ones on the bottoms perimeter the side ones and the front plastick...

Then it should be screwd up and easy to get of

It is not the easiest thing to replace, and you will have to solder some.

You will take off the FRONT of the MPC, not the bottom.

I actually just did this repair myself last week, and so here are some pictures.

This is what you will see when you take the face plate off. You do this by undoing the screws on the SIDE of the MPC.

Now some detail, you can see on the left I have the slider disconnected at the bottom and it is flipped up. Take note that you will also need to remove that metal thing that sits underneath it.

To do the actual repair, I did not disconnect the circuit board, but just flipped it on it's side. See this pic...

If you want to do it like that, do it at your own risk. Gravity is not your friend at an angle like that. If you can, be careful about it and just take the whole circuit board off so you can lay it flat while you desolder and resolder the slider.

ps. FWIW I used my MPC without the slider for years...not entirely necessary but fun if you got it.

I was nervous when I bought my MPC and the NV slider didn't work! Tried to solder new one myself but it needs an accurate hand, so I gave my toy to a guy who works in a car service and he soldered it well, everything works now.

thanks for all the help guys. the slider i got from cimple solutions works a teat. very good price and quick delivery too. didnt fancy tring to fit it myself, looks much too tricky for myself. luckily a friend of mine is well tuned in when it comes to this sort of thing. everything working fine now

i got one off of mpcstuff and the shipping was very fast, parts were packaged well, and I'm up and running on my 2000xl.
Its quite an easy fix you just need to watch a few vids of how to solder and VERY IMPORTANT tin the leads of the VR pot BEFORE you solder it into place.

My 2000xl came without a working slider. I bought a replacement and soldered it in. I am glad I put the slider on, because it actually serves a good purpose for me.
